Topping E30 DAC Review

Interesting. Do you see Err on E30 screen? Maybe other input connected?

Yes, the E30 display does flash "Err", just before it goes to sleep. No, there are no other inputs connected.

A second way to get the E30 to sleep is to switch the input from USB to one of the other interfaces. It then also flashes "Err" before going to sleep.

Also if you unplug the USB cable, does it standby?

Yes, that's a third way ...

Interesting, maybe you can try Manjaro, it's 64bit Linux. That's the only difference i can think of now. Or buy a raspberry pi 4 which has better usb port I think.

By the way my E30 serial number start with 1910.

The most likely explanation is a hardware difference between the Pi3B+ and the Pi4. Next would be the Linux kernel version (Volumio is running on 4.19.86-v7+, MoOde is 4.19.115 4.19.97 (my sd card is a version behind the latest) ). I doubt that the distro running on top of that matters too much.

So is it possible to arrange gradations of the display glow and complete shutdown by means of firmware?
There’s a button on the remote that allows you to set dim level. Only standby mode turns the display off fully.

Anyone else have their E30 lock up? I leave mine on all the time as it’s in a rack. Only use USB as a source from a RPi with Volumio. This morning I tried to play music and troubleshot every other component fully and still music wouldn’t play. Rebooted the E30 and now I’m back in action. My initial thought is that the new firmware is at play here. I’ve had the E30 in this operation mode for a far longer duration without issue (this is the first time) before updating the firmware.

What you guys think about this: https://www.ugreen.com/product/UGRE...le_Stereo_Audio_Cable_Gold_Plated_6ft-en.html
1m: $5. Is 1m too long ? This will be used between E30>amp.
There is also these two:
1- https://www.futureshop.co.uk/qed-profile-precision-2-rca-to-2-rca-audio-cable $20
2- https://www.futureshop.co.uk/qed-performance-audio-cable-graphite $33

My dac, amp and cables will be very close to my pc monitor, bookshelf speakers and wifi antenna of my motherboard.
Another option - including technical reasoning.

I wouldn't call what I'm experiencing a lockup, but yes, I will lose the link between the E30 and PC occasionally. I haven't tracked down exactly what's happening but suspect that I am causing the issue with how I use the PC over the course of a day. It has happened with both firmwares.

A simple power cycle (unplug / plug) fixed the issue every time. It doesn't happen during a listening session, which can be for hours, but seems to be in between. Therefore, it is a non issue for me. If it was losing connection during a listening session, it would be a very big deal. The E30 is right next to my PC and the replug is quick. Takes all of 10 seconds to fix.
Interesting. Mine is a bit more inconvenient to power cycle. I did want to add that I was able to still switch sources and that didn’t remedy it. Also good to know (for the topping team) that it’s not a regression, although for some reason my dev team always seems to think that “pre-existing bugs” aren’t as important as bugs newly introduced. Next time I’ll see if I can fix it with the remote (easier because of my install location).

No problem. The pop issue is a thing but it doesn't mean that the device isn't capable of being a preamplifier. I'm satisfied using mine as such.

I also really hope that everything will be in order with the volume controll. Why should these "specialists" give such restless advice ?! If the DAC is with volume control, therefore, this adjustment must be performed qualitatively throughout the scale!

Changing the brightness of the display will not replace my dangerous volume control! The site clearly says - performs the role of a pre-amplifier !, therefore, be so kind as - do it!

Google translate doesn't quite do the job in this case.

って言うか、俺さっぱりわからん。

How to set preferred ASIO buffer size, 16-4096 samples?

I do believe that E30 could turn off the display with the firmware upgrade. Nevertheless, E30 is sounding better after a few days run-in, and proved what the others said : it is very sensitive to different types of power input.

I do believe that E30 could turn off the display with the firmware upgrade.

So you're saying:

1. Pre-firmware upgrade, the E30 did not go into Standby mode when connected via USB (to what computer, what OS?)
2. Post-upgrade, it does go into Standby mode when there's no audio.

Is that correct?

Since I was not having any of the issues that the firmware upgrade was supposed to solve, I have not applied it (would require borrowing a Win10 machine, which is a bit of a bother in these quarantine times).

Personally, everything I have seen indicates that @Toku was correct: the E30 stays awake as long as it detects +5V at the USB power pin, regardless of whether audio is playing.

I think he was postulating that the feature could be modified to do so via a firmware update if the engineering effort was performed. Not that it was included in the version posted on toppings website. While possible I don't see it happening, there's nothing defective with it's operation, rather just not the behavior some expect.

To everyone
Don't get me wrong. There are two types of firmware for USB DACs such as the E30. It is on the firmware of the XMOS USB connection and the firmware of the MCU that controls the system of the main unit.
The only update we can make is the XMOS USB firmware. The firmware of the MCU is updated by reinstalling the software using a dedicated tool. This can only be done in the factory.
