It might be due to you having open back planar phones to compare to the closed back FiiO cans, and nothing with the amp/DAC you have.
In this case, I am comparing the sound quality, sound character and soundstage width of the FT1 between the Fiio K7 and the Fiio Ka17.

Just got my DX5II in. I apologize if this has been addressed before or is common knowledge, but when turning the volume knob fast is it normal for the volume update to lag behind? I don't have much experience with other dac/amps so I don't know if this is some intentional feature or processing overhead when the volume gets changed quickly. When I turn it slowly it updates instantly.

What kind of a delay are we talking about (i.e. how much lag)?

Exactly this and how fast was the turning. At "normal" speeds I have never noticed any lag.
Like, really fast. It's not a huge issue or anything because I realistically wouldn't change it that fast but it just bothers me a tiny bit, lol. Try to flick your finger fast across the top of the volume knob, there seems to be a "velocity" limit, right?

Hello everyone, this is my first post here.
I’d like to ask for some advice regarding the reliability of Topping and SMSL products. My recent experience has been a bit frustrating:
Topping DX7 Pro: Failed after two years, and unfortunately, it took my headphones down with it.
SMSL DO400: Arrived with noise in one channel out of the box and was returned immediately as a defective unit.
I am currently considering the DX5II, but given my track record, I’m hesitant. Are these kinds of reliability issues common with these brands, or have I just been particularly unlucky?
I would appreciate any insights or long-term experiences you might have.
Thank you!

The folder still shows the driver as v5.74, though...

At least it does when I go into my windows VM. Looking at that same folder in MacOS, it shows v6.0.0.

I can confirm it is the V6.0.0 driver, I installed it on a Windows laptop.

I'm certain it's got everything to do with the Windows 11 VM I'm using -- if it's a proper Windows computer, I'm sure it's all just fine. I'm not entirely sure why there would be such a discrepancy, but it's there. It even shows up as v6.0.0 when I download the folder while in MacOS.

I had to download the file, upload it to my google drive, then download it from there in the Windows 11 VM.

With latest v2.07 fireware, there are still bugs for Toslink when connected with LG TV (LG C4). Under SPDIF mode 1, the sound drops about every 10-30 seconds. Under SPDIF mode 2, it stills drops about every few minutes. Is this happening to everyone, or is it just my machine?

I didn't have this issue with my previous Topping D50s, so it can’t be a problem with the cables or the TV.

Sometimes you just have bad luck. I have had really bad luck with SMSL and Topping. I'm doubtful about buying any future audio from Chinese companies after dealing with bugs and QA issues with several DACs and Amps. To their credit they are usually happy to replace it, but when the replacemant has even more problems it stops being worth it.

Wouldn't be the first problem with LG

I know the spdif signal from LG TV has a lot of jitter. That is why SPDIF MODE 2 exists. But clearly it has not completely solve this problem. And also previouly I used my old D50s, everything is fine. I still think it’s an issue with the topping.

Are you asking if that issue still occurs with FW v2.07 or is that issue occurring for you with v2.07?

I personally reported that exact issue to Topping a few FWs ago, but they fixed it with FW v1.93. I have not encountered it with v2.07 (at least not that I've noticed). The stutter using SPDIF mode 2 is actually the "expected" behaviour.

And prior to that, I had that issue happen with my DX5 II D50 III using a specific TOSLINK cable, under specific conditions (i.e. if the sample rate was set higher than 96kHz). I would try a different cable even if you didn't have an issue with it with your D50s.

I've tried v1.91 v1.93 and v2.07. The results are the same. Due to the high noise of spdif signal, SPDIF mode 1 is unusable. I've heard some other DAC use high level DPLL to solve this problem. So maybe SPDIF mode 2 uses the same way. But you said this hiccup every few minutes are "expected". Why is that? Will other DACs like SMSL C200 under high DPLL also have this issue?
