Topping DX5 II

There was definitely a syntax thing going on that my idiot brain was struggling to figure out when I responded, yes.

I think whatever issue is/was going on with their A70 isn't close to being the same as the DC protection kicking in with the DX5 II.
Yes this is the correct interpretation. My A70 Pro is back in its box, inoperable. I am concerned about the long term reliability of this unit given my bad experience with a higher end but similar Topping unit. Yes intermittent DC protection is a different issue but mine is in constant DC protection mode and no longer works. A very expensive paperweight.

Hello everyone. Guys, I need your advice.
I bought DX5 II, immediately updated to the latest firmware 1.66, installed Topping Tune together with the driver and connected to my computer with Windows 10 x64.
I am worried about one detail that does not give me peace.

The DX5 II specifications indicate that when connected via USB, the maximum sound resolution is 32 bits and 768 kHz. But for some reason, my computer only displays up to 384 kHz.
Where is the error? What am I doing wrong?

Think Windows sound system maxes out at 384KHz, you need ASIO etc to go above that.

I really hope this update works better for you. Good to hear that there's been no issues so far.
It seems slightly better in that it retains some information more often, but it's still very broken for me.

I setup the DX5 II last night with 2 user configs for my iLoud MTM monitors and HD660S headphones. This morning it has remembered both the config names, but has lost all the filters for my MTMs (the HD660S filters are fine for now)...

EQ1:MTM should have the same filters as the iLoud.MTM2 local config (which is the same as iLoud.MTM with the gains rounded to the nearest 0.5dB)...

Why does it worry you?

What are you trying to use it for?

Other than the few DXD files at 352.8kHz I'm unaware of anything native.

Are you aiming for higher upsampling rates?

TLDR: it's windows max freq 384khz, you can't set it higher. But at any player with asio \ wasapi you can go up to 32\768khz

Your MTM filter looks to be the default “Bass 1” filter.

Painful as it is, I’d factory reset and leave the default Topping filters and try putting your data in slots 6 through 10.

My WAG is from when Topping initially made the filters unchangeable. A firmware update allowed the user to change them, but it looks buggy. Slots 6 through 10m were always for user data.

Yes, EQ1 has reverted to Bass1 filters, and I already tried leaving the default filters in place and only using 6 and 7 for my own, it doesn't make any difference.

I'm still wondering if it's more of an issue with Topping Tune than the DX5 II, though. And again -- what happens if you manually create the filters in the User Config vs. importing or even transferring from the Local Config.

I have been saving from local config to user config by right clicking on the local config and selecting 'Save to device'. So let's try some alternatives...

1. Selected iLoud.MTM2 in local config. Pressed '+' next to User Config. This copies the selected local config filters to the device and prompts for a new name for the User Config. I don't know if the results will differ from my usual approach, but worth a try.

2. Selected 'Default' in Local Config. Pressed '+' next to User Config. Deleted the 2 default filters. Manually added 10 filters, entered pre-amp gain and settings for all 10 filters for my MTM PEQ. Shook the cramp out of my fingers :)

I discovered one anomaly during the execution of #2. My 1st filter has a Q value of 16.2 (filters were calculated in REW from measurements taken with UMIK-1 using moving microphone method). I discovered that Topping.Tune will accept a maximum value of 15 for Q. I left the value at 15 for the manually entered config (i'm pretty certain i'm not going to hear any difference!).

Note: The copied User Config from #1 still shows the first filter with a Q value of 16.2 and the graph to match.

Topping/Tune looks like this now...

However, when I click on each of the User Configs, the DX5 II shows the following on it's own display...

EQ1 Base 2
EQ2 MTM(addedwith+)
EQ3 Dynamic

So only EQ2 matches the name in Topping.Tune.

I will now turn off the DX5 II and see what happens...

After powering DX5 II off and on with the remote (Topping.Tune was shutdown for the power cycle)...

EQ1 has changed name from EQ1: HD660S to EQ1: Bass 2, the HD660s filters have disappeared and been replaced with some defaults.

EQ2 name is the same and the filters have remained - no change!

EQ3 has changed name from EQ3: MTM(manual) to EQ3: Dynamic, the filters have remained (the first filter still has a Q value of 15).

:(

I will try creating more configs with method #1 above and see if they stick.

*edit* there were more User Configs when I scrolled down - I had deleted these configs in Topping.Tune prior to the power cycle...

OK, if I add a User Config, in any way, and switch to the config in Topping.Tune and the DX5 display does not register a change, then the config is not saved to the DX5 II.

Next test... I have added/removed/renamed configs until the names are aligned between Topping.Tune and the DX5 II display and the configs switch reliably when changing the DX5 II output. It looks like this...

Time for another power cycle (after this track finishes)....

In my opinion Topping Tune is definitely a weak link, I had continual issues with it when using my D50III and will see if they persist when my DX5II arrives, hopefully next week. I gave up with PEQ on the D50 and went back to Peace APO.

Yeah the PEQ saving is really finicky. Strangest thing I've seen was when I had "Flat5" config (just -5 dB preamp, no filters) and when sometime later I checked my configs again one peak filter had been added to that "Flat5" config.

It seems to me that there are some serious race conditions in DX5II - ToppingTune connection which causes all sorts of issues when saving PEQ.

Yeah, I have the same impression regarding race conditions. I've been careful to not change too many setting, too quickly and give the software and hardware time to settle between changes - not very scientific, I know, but a natural reaction to the feeling that the timing is somehow off.

Good grief the amount of transient smearing and phase shift of that eq situation, not to mind your business but can't you just simplify it to 3-4 bell dips? Also you're basically shaving lower mids where most information sits to make top and bottom pop-up
