This "protection" systematically returned upon switching on and without headset connected...That's the DC protection kicking in, usually when the volume level is on the high end.

I think because it's pretty much gain-dependent. I seem to recall that there's a loose "rule of thumb" to set the output gain from the source (if possible) at around 80% instead of 100%, which would probably solve a lot of the DC protection kicking in for people.
What do you mean by gain? If the output level is the same, gain should not matter.Oh, sure, but that's not exactly what I was saying. The DC protection kicking in is very clearly gain-dependent, which is why rolling back Spotify's output resulted in that person being able to crank the volume, and not trigger the protection.
Is it possible to bypass the DC protection in settings or it must be always on?I did some more testing using the same track. The YouTube video below from 2:40 to 3:00 does not trigger it as it has its volume lowered by 4.2 dB (See Stats for nerds > Volume). Lowering the system volume by 4.06 dB while volume is full in Qobuz also does not trigger it. At -2.0 dB, it triggers briefly at 2:59 but does not at -2.25 dB.
It cannot be disabled on the device. Is it possible to bypass the DC protection in settings or it must be always on?
Has anyone noticed that after installing the 1.62 firmware update, the unit is A LOT cooler?
Hmm, they seem to have removed all DX5 II firmwares

My unit does seem pretty cool now. It's connected to my PC which is on for most of my waking hours.Has anyone noticed that after installing the 1.62 firmware update, the unit is A LOT cooler?
The gain setting is for the headphone amplifier, no the line out. I think this is 'normal' behaviour for a DAC/Amp. If the gain controlled both the HP and pre-amp outputs, you could be in for some nasty surprises when switching between them.By the way, the reason why I was scrolling through this thread and searching for a direct link to the firmware update was that I just realised the gain setting doesn't affect the line out of my Toping Dx5 II at all. I'm not sure if it has at any point, since today was the first time I tried to change the gain when in Line Out All -output mode. Anyone else having this same problem?
I've done factory reseat, it didn't help. Configured everything again, line out is set in preamp mode and the volume knob works. When listening from HP-out (single ended) the gain affects it just as it should. But when listening via the line out from my nearfield monitors, changing the gain changes nothing. Bought the unit about three weeks ago, the firmware is V1.49.
At least in my Topping A70 Pro the gain affects all the of outputs. The same goes with the L70. But they are hp amps. The gain affected the line outs of my previous dac/amp SMSL DL200. I therefore find it very odd if this would be normal but it in fact can be the case here. Just realised that in the Dx5II manual it reads "Gain (Headphone gain)". Really weird, I'll have to ask from the retailer also. I'd need the high gain with my NF monitors. The gain setting is for the headphone amplifier, no the line out. By the way is the firmware

By the way is the firmware version V1.62 available anywhere?
edit: added the mention about dl 200
Yes, I would be hesitant to flash 1.62 now it's been pulled.Manually edit the url below and change 1.57 to 1.62. They pulled it for a reason, so I’d be hesitant to just flash it for no reason.

They pulled them all. If it works, I’d wait.To add: is it possible to flash the 1.57 to my Dx5II as it now has 1.49 installed, and would it have any benefits (regarding to fixed bugs etc) or should I just keep the 1.49?
Why on earth..

well, seems like I'm buying one then lolSupport for SPDIF modes was just added in firmware 1.62, available from main menu.
