Topping DX5 II

Just to provide further clarity regarding availability Shenzhenaudio modified the product page to include the following -

The white version is expected to be available by the end of July.

The black version is expected to be available in late August.

The silver version is expected to be available in September.

So if you have ordered the Silver version you could be in for a few months wait. I find it slightly odd as personally like the look of the White version, but guess most other people see it differently likely due to existing kit colour and wanting it to match - personally would wish they all were white.

And yet, there are plenty of brands who do not have a reputation for releasing buggy, unreliable products. Since we don't have access to Topping's RMA data, that's what we have to go on.
Nope. We need to take with a grain of salt what is posted there. Remember, on the internet nobody knows you're a dog.

Exactly. Also there are tons of factors in regards to products and issues, the biggest is volume i.e. a product that has 1000 sales yet has 5 delivered with issues has the same number of people complaining as a similar product that sold 20 and 5 have issues.

I am just guessing but I feel Topping did the first batch as a proof of production run / Beta run, i.e. it was just to test if the product needed any changes to the product and the production process before they did the main production run. This is semi common practice with all companies, but Chinese companies do it with a larger run that you would normally find elsewhere and often sell the product if there are no issues. Problem with this approach where its a very software driven product, you need to be able to rapidly update the firmware to support those early buyers, and its one thing Topping isn't great on.

I hope for the best. Firmware 1.39 was out pretty fast, and more fixes are due next week as I have learned here. In the meantime I enjoy my BLACK DX5 II.

I Hope topping include the DC Fix aswell.

It would put minds at ease if they did, but you're likely never going to encounter that issue. Not unless all of your music has DC.

The reported bugs on the DX5‑II discouraged me before I even received it. So I cancelled my order and immediately opted for the RME ADI‑2 DAC, currently on an excellent €850 promotion — at its rightful price — and which strikes me as a much more reassuring choice.

Personally, I wouldn't let a few UI bugs and a PEQ bug we already know is going to be fixed in the next FW update stop me from keeping my order in place.

You’re right: this choice was above all to have peace of mind. The DX5‑II had always been just a fallback; I had always wanted the RME ADI‑2 DAC, and this great promotion gave me the perfect excuse to take the plunge calmly.

I get it - eliminating the "what ifs" is certainly an important thing in this silly hobby

Hi everyone :)

I would like to return to the initial subject of this review: the TOPPING DX5 (not Lite or II) please... ;)

Has anyone carried out new measurements with the latest driver (v5.72.0 - from November 13, 2024) and the latest firmware (v1.42 - from July 6, 2023) ?

This should make it possible to see that the 'ESS HUMP' has disappeared, that the details of the JITTER have been adjusted and perhaps that the SINAD itself could have changed...

... In my humble opinion this DAC seems 'better' (I know it's subjective) than my old TOPPING E30, TOPPING E50, SMSL SU-1, SMSL PS200, SMSL D6s (same SINAD = 122) and even the TOPPING E70 VELVET (better SINAD = 123).

To remain as objective as possible, I tested the SMSL D6s and the TOPPING DX5 in comparative listening with a 1kHz signal in order to obtain by adjustment strictly the same output voltage on the two devices and under the same conditions then I listened several times to the same two titles that I know perfectly:

- Eric CLAPTON - Unplugged (DSD 128) 'Tears in heaven'
-> the sound of the triangle at 15 seconds is more natural with the TOPPING DX5.

- DAFT PUNK - Random access memory (studio master edition - 24 bits / 88.2 kHz) 'Get lucky'
-> in general, the 'definition' of the treble is much better with the TOPPING DX5 (among others).

Okay, it's probably still a 'psychoacoustic' effect but very sincerely I don't think so: can it be possible that there are indeed differences in your opinion ?

NB:

- TOPPING DX5 with Filter 1 (mode 1)
- SMSL D6s with Filter 4 (FL 4)
PS:

I noticed absolutely no 'heating problems' with the TOPPING DX5 with my infrared thermometer regardless of the location of the case.

In short, I find this device very good, especially at the price I got it NEW (€200) :D

Hmm, as someone who ordered it in silver from SZA fairly early, with a determined ship out date of July 31st, I really hope this only applies to future orders and not already placed ones!
I assume they would message their customers if it was delayed, but I'll go ahead and ask.

Update: They say they don't have any knowledge of an availability date, and will message me before the scheduled date to request a delivery date extension if necessary. ><

Pretty sure it's only applicable to newly-placed orders. I ordered my silver DX5 II back in June (14th) through Amazon, and it is scheduled to ship sometime later this month/early August. I purposefully ordered it there because the shipping time was so much later with the hope that any issues that came up right away would either be fixed or be in the process of being fixed by the time I get my unit.

Err... I think you're confused perhaps about where you're posting?!?

This thread is about the DX5 II, not the original DX5.

@ICIETDIYEUR This should be posted in the DX5 thread at:

Sorry

The more I play with DX5 2 there more like it.
Gave a new voice for Anananda compared to my Dx180.
Sounds way more technical, but with help of EQ I get what I want.
EQ profiles are messed up, but they work like a charm.
Mine device soft reboots every time on boot, and looses all seting exept peq profile which is fine to me.
Tommorow planing to use them with Focal Lensys Pro, should be intersting pairing.

The old DX5 only has SE outputs, also via 4-pin XLR.

The new DX5 II outputs the balanced signal via 4.4mm AND 4-pin XLR. This means two amplifiers per channel with approximately four times the power of the 6.35mm SE output.

When using your 4-pin XLR headphone cable, make sure it's a genuine balanced cable and not just a fake SE cable, which could damage the EX5 II. Unfortunately, some sellers sell such things.
How do you do that?

It won’t damage the device. Similar to all other topping devices, the circuit has over current protection.
The mosfet will operate in saturation mode, and the current will be limited.

I saw the dates for release based on color, staying the course. End of august it is for me, cheers for all those on the DX5ii train!
