Topping DX5 II

Mine does the clicking aswell but only in HPA SE (6.35mm headphone jack) mode. If I only choose HPA BAL (4.4mm/4-pin-XLR headphone jack) there is no clicking. At -11db (with the 6.3mm jack beeing used) it starts but if there are Headphones connected it stops. So not really a problem I guess?
jiw already mentioned there are ways to enable a couple of outputs. When hp se is included it will click. Some people just want as many outputs enabled at the same time so they don’t need to turn on / off. This is a problem for them.

It’s not related to driver.
 
Every one can verify that. Just play the track on YouTube, using max volume. If the unit doesn’t shut the headphone outputs off, the dc protection is not triggering.

Beware this test may damage your headphones. Use headphones you are about to throw away for the test.
Took the time to play that track through the ADI-2/4 with DC protection set to on instead of filter, which is the default for the device.

This should mute output if and as long as DC is too high. Level was -12 dBr, which is more than my average listening level using the E3 (-16 to -18 dBr). Did not happen.

What would that mean in relation to the DX5 II's DC protection?

It would be really interesting if someone would compare the two devices impartially and with balanced levels via headphones.
DX5-II and ADI-2/4 are in different locations (living room vs. office) and settings (lounge chair vs. office chair).

I love the RME for it's feature set (just consider auto gain or the remote software), it's flexibility and it's performance.

I love the Topping for it's power and it's price. The DX5-II runs way cooler.

Sound is not what sets them apart. Both are top notch.

Currently I'm not using Topping's own USB driver at all
Unless you want to playback very high sample rates and/or DSD, what is the reason for even downloading a driver for Windows? Most DACs use the UAC2 standard these days.

Different brand, but in the case of the SMSL RAW MDA-1, their driver for PC included an audio control panel app, and it was updated to allow people to change the DAC streaming setting from "only turn on when needed" to "always on" resolved a popping issue from the DAC essentially going to sleep any time there was no audio content being sent through the DAC. Because there is no required driver on Mac, and no control panel app is provided, we don't have the luxury to be able to set the streaming to be always on.

you're only referring to the input spec. In the datasheet it documented the output spec and if it detects 50VDC/100mA it will shut the output off. To me this is fairly reasonable number.
50V/100mA is the rating for the open collector DC-Error output pin J6.7 which would typically be used to drive an LED error indicator, or as a pull-down for a microcontroller input pin. The level of DC on the output required to trigger the DC-Error condition is not specified in the datasheet, but this post says the trigger level is >12V of DC on the output, equivalent to 36W into a 4R load. That's fine to protect against an output transistor failing short, but may be too high to protect some speakers entirely. Manufacturers using the module may or may not include other DC protection.
 
by using
1) a music track that previously well known for having high DC --- Blue Light by the band Bloc Party, in the Anti Gravity Remix version. You can listen it here on youtube (caution: it may damage your headphone if you crank volume to loud and your HP amp does not have DC protection feature.)

DX5II is not able to shutdown the output when such signal is fed in.
I didn't see anyone actually measure this with multimeter yet so I did a quick test. While playing that YouTube video Topping DX5 II outputs upto 1.71 VDC from 6.3 mm connection with high gain and max volume. I used 100ms response time, i.e. output was 1.71 VDC for at least 100ms.

Considering that nicely recorded music is at a total of 100mVAC average (300mVAC for max hot, etc) at line level for normal playback, I'm curious at what level this thing is at the recording.
Has anyone who has it analyzed it?

What kind of broken equipment recorded this thing? :facepalm:

You'd be surprised how many albums are recorded with objectively bad equipment cause they like how it sounds.

Many artists are a lot more about the vibe of something rather than doing it the right way.

No problem at all about artistic choices and sound.

DC does not sound though. And that's exactly the problem, it can plague gear (recording or playback) and only a few will notice it without measuring, usually when stuff break, get hot for no reason, etc.

Edit: talking about vibe and trend, the latest is mixing white noise with the tracks. Imagine what happens to some amps and speakers up high with such a signal.
 
I think this was talked about a while back, but can someone confirm is it, or will it be possible to equal the left and right channels independently like you can do on the RME?
 
Also, another one. The sub-sub-menus in the White theme are shown in the Aurora theme after some number of power cycles or amount of time. This might also apply to the other themes but I did not have the patience to test that.
This also happens with the blue theme. So it might apply to all. I tried power cycling it yesterday up to 10 times and that did nothing, but when I turned it on the first time yesterday with the white theme as well as today with the blue theme, it was again the case. Power cycling the unit without changing the display settings does not fix it.
