Topping DX5 II

I'm thinking of updating my Topping Tune software to v1.16. It's on v1.14 currently. I don't have any issues with the current version, but since there's a new version i figure why not.

Do the User Config and PEQ profiles get reset if i update the software? If so, where are those files located on Windows 11? What folder? I'd like to back them up to make sure they don't get lost. I tried looking but i didn't see anything that looks like the profiles.

Follow up question, is there any reason to update the software if you're not getting any issues? Are there any added features or improved algos? Or is it just bug fixing sorta stuff?

Same question for firmware actually - My firmware is still on v1.78. Is there any reason to update this if you're not having issues? Is there any gain to be had? Or is it just for fixing issues?

Cheers!

I upgrade Topping Tune to version 1.16 and firmware version 2.31. don't upgrade DX5II firmare to version 2.46 - you will have problem to controll DX5II true Topping Tune. Wth version 2.31 all is working fine.

I don't see any advantage of Topping Tune over Topping Home. Topping Tune is limited to an equalizer only and you have to do all the other settings through the DX5 II menu, in Topping Tune all the basic settings from the DX5 II menu are in front of you and you can change them with one click. The only drawback is that you need internet, which I think is not a problem for most users nowadays.

There's no need of Internet to manage the DX5 II thru Topping Home.
But I haven't found a way to see the hardware version in Topping Home, even though it is displayed in Topping Tune.

It doesn't work for me without internet, it says this:

Okay, so it might work, or it might not.
It's OK for me, Topping Home 1.2.7 / Android 16 (Xiaomi Hyper OS 0.0.303.0), DX5 II 2.46.

The only think you have to access frequently is equalizer, other hardware settings you only set once and forgat about it.

There are a lot of new features, and some pretty major bugs fixed since that FW. It makes no sense (IMO) to not update the FW on any device unless that FW is known to to be faulty.

But as @juzio said, if you want to keep using Topping Tune, keep it at v2.31. IMO, the Home app for Android/iOS is a lot better, and the Home web app is quite good as it allows you to do everything (change any of the settings on the device, upload/create new PEQ profiles, and even update FW).

Home is only supported after a certain FW update, so if you haven't updated the DX5 II's FW, Home will not see the device.

Edit: I should clarify that the Home app for Android/iOS is supported in an earlier FW, and that only requires a Bluetooth connection, The Home web control center is only supported from, IIRC, v2.31 or v2.39, so you need at least either of those for the web app to be supported with the DX5 II.

Is FW version 2.39 causing any problem with Topping Tune ?

There have been some compatibility issues since Topping added support for the Home web app, but I think Topping Tune still works okay with v2.39. The issues only really show up, IME, when you use both the Home web app, and Topping Tune at the same time (but not necessarily simultaneously). I think as long as you don't use the web app at all, you might be okay. I also think you can roll back v2.39 to v2.31 if it doesn't work out, btu don't quote me on that.

Both DX5 II and DX1 II has been removed from the list of supported hardware for Topping TUNE.

The move towards Topping Home has been obvious for quite some time, thus it will be fair to assume that every piece of hardware which CAN be moved will be.

Topping Tune is legacy approaching obsolete as far as I'm concerned. Whether I like it or not. What others do is their business, but I will remove Topping Tune from my Mac.

I was running my DX5 II on firmware 2.31, but lately I was experiencing static sound in the output and then no audio at all. Yesterday upgraded firmware to version 2.39. So far no more problem with audio, but Topping Tune Have issue with that firmware. First didn't hold PEQ loaded under User Config, after turning PC and DX5 II OFF and back ON those PEQ settings disappear. When Those PEQ's are loaded under Local Config They stay there. Second when switching between EQ's, DX5 II screen displaying only one name which is the first name in EQ list. Whatever setting are stored in those EQ's Topping Tune send them to the DX5 II regardless the name displayed on the Unit screen.

Updated with latest firmware, neither DX5 II nor DX1 II have support for Tune. a.o. they would have removed the dac identifiers in the firmware that Tune needs to pair.

Further, there may very well be more or less significant changes to the firmware of the dacs making it entirely pointless to carry on trying. They develop the firmware and Home to work together, and they no longer have to worry about any shortcomings of Tune. It's dead as far as DX5 II and DX1 II is concerned. IF they can kill Tune for the dacs still supporting Tune, they will do that too.

Don't expect any feature updates to Tune, expect fixes and security based updates only until they remove it completely from their pages. It's on life support.

Trying to use Tune with incompatible devices is nothing but asking for trouble.

I can't understand why they kill Topping Tune for DX5 II. Now to control Unit you have to have internet connection or another device (Android/Apple). Having standalone windows or apple software is more convenient in my opinion.

With Topping Tune, what did you control in the DX5 II besides setting its equalizer?

Because Topping believe it is beneficial (to them). It is easier to maintain, control and develop. You can us Qt, Swift, Rust or whatever to make apps for various platforms "in one go", but it is still easier to do it through a browser. The "apps" tends to be just a wrapapp.

I don't like it at all and have told Topping so in no uncertain terms, but hey, big salesvolumes makes reactions like mine insignificant. Simply because most doesn't care, and those who do are outnumbered.

Okay, but Tune didn't give you anything more than an equalizer. If you compare it to Home, there are no advantages. I was also skeptical for the first 10 minutes, but then when I saw what people had created I said wow, this is cool. And if you have once introduced the equalizers in Local (DAC) Topping Tune or Home, you may not need them until the next edit of the equalizers, the device works completely autonomously without the need for an additional software. And yes, as we already wrote, the only drawback of Home is that it doesn't work without the internet, but nowadays we almost always have internet. And to clarify, I use Topping Tune on PC, I don't use an app.

It's not what I control it's about conveniences. Don't have to have internet and cellphone.
Believe there are 10 presets on the DX5 II - it's 3 on DX1 II. My suggestion is that you put some effort into it setting it up using Topping home and the latest firmware. Once you have the profiles you want/need/am happy with, you can remove the webapp/helper, and you don't have to worry about internet and so on until you decide you want to update the firmware or are changing your setup.

I have the profiles I need, and have no software from Topping installed on my Mac anymore. I mainly keep PEQ off and use EQ as my setup is pretty fixed anyway.
