Topping DX5 II

"Thank you for the detailed report. After the firmware upgrade, the DX5 II is now compatible with Web EQ, making it easier and more convenient to set and modify EQ on the web, and it also provides an Auto EQ function."
This is the respond from them for my complain that latest firmware make Topping Tune not working.
To me at least, it is pretty evident that Topping Tune is being dropped. I certainly don't rely upon it for DX1 II.

Would definately prefer Tune getting the goodies and the non existence of Home, but it is what it is, and I somehow believe one has to relate to that, like it or not.

And yes, I have expressed my views to Topping Support / Marketing.

I am curious to hear how the auto EQ is working. Like, how does it know which sounds actually come out of the speakers?

Ordered the DX5 II last weekend so I'm preparing myself for what's to come. I guess I gotta update the FW anyway if that isn't already on the latest version.

The auto EQ is for headphones. It will take publicly available measured headphone curves and automatically adjust them to a target curve.

Ohhh okay thanks. That makes sense. I was already wondering how they could know my specific room conditions

I'm using it as a preamp, so totally different usecase. Thanks!

Hello from Germany,

my @TOPPING @TOPPING-Service DX5 II arrived last monday from audiophonics.fr
The device was delivered to me with firmware version V2.10 already pre-installed by the factory.
I did not perform any modifications or updates myself. The unit worked fine for just a few hours of normal operation, but then it suddenly crashed completely and refused to reboot.
To resolve this issue, I attempted to use the forced emergency update mode (holding down the volume knob while powering on) to flash the latest official firmware V2.46. However, this process failed entirely. The device is completely locked and continuously displays the following critical error on the screen: "Firmware Damage".
Since the device was delivered with this unstable firmware and failed within the first few hours of standard use, this is a clear-cut product defect and warranty case.
The system is obviously completely corrupted and cannot be restored by the end-user.
I am extremely disappointed by the substandard quality of the product.

Hello from Germany,
Sad to hear about your experiences. I just got word that my unit was shipped, also from Audiophonics. But the amount of negative posts I read about crashes and near-DOA problems make me kind of worried about the life expectancy of a DX5 II..

Luckily I live in the EU and expect at least two years of warranty but even then. Going through a warranty process is no joke either.

Keep us posted on the process of your issue!

sell you can have static websites that implement all their functionality via client side calls. My devicePEQ codebase is ultimately a static set of JS files that interacts with devices connected to the users PC/MAC via the USB-c (or bluetooth or network) connections.

FYI: I am adding support for this Topping (and the 2 other Toppings that I have with PEQ - even though each one has a very different implementation ) but that will be a few weeks away.
That would be great. I dislike audio equipment that requires the availability of an external web service during its entire lifetime. Topping can decide any time that it has been enough or disappear from the planet. Where will you share it? Someplace like GitHub.? Digging in your site at the moment.

Hmm....

I don't have experience with DX5II. However, it has happened a few times that firmware updates have crashed, and Topping Home / Helper handled those crashes with ease (power off - cable out) for a few minutes before another go at it), another go, and the update went through. Also used Topping Tune for rolling back firmware without issues.

NOT arguing your problem is solvable this way, thus just anecdotal.

Hello,
I unpacked the device in monday, connected it, and started using it without checking the firmware version. Why would I? Until yesterday, I wasn't aware of any firmware issues with the DX5 II.
I listened to music for two hours and made a few settings adjustments in the menu. That's when the device froze and crashed. I left it unplugged for an hour and turned it back on. No success. Then, through a Google search, I stumbled upon this forum. I tried multiple times to install the latest firmware 2.46 on both a Windows PC and my Mac Mini running the latest macOS, but without success. I think the crash during use damaged the bootloader. The device has now been sent in for repair.
Extremely annoying after only 2 hours of use!!

That IS annoying!

Have you spotted others reporting about bricked units related to firmware updates?

I thought of the Topping firmware handling as pretty robus, it is pretty critical and a concern to me. ...might be more fragile than I assumed...

If a device is freezing and turning itself off, the last thing you should attempt is a firmware update (which requires the device to remain stable throughout the process). Good luck with your warranty repair.

Might be, Topping Tune supporting DX5 II only up to a certain firmware edition.

On the download page for Topping Tune, V 1.16, dated 2026-05-21, DX5 II is not listed as supported.

According to the site, the following devices are compatible:
D50 III
D90 III Discrete
Centaurus
D900
DX9 Discrete
E50 II
DX1 II

Speculation, but there might be a glitch in Topping Tune not picking up differences in firmware editions, or it might still work for DX5 II despite what's stated on their download page. But I would never attempt to download and install firmware through an application not explicitly supporting the device in question. Fiddling with PEQ might be fine, but no way I would use it for firmware on a DX5 II when it's not listed.

It's even removed from the Downloads tab in the DX5 II product page.

And for the record, updating firmware on the DX5 II was never done through Topping Tune.

The whole idea that it needs a cloud based service to do PEQ tuning was something that only came to light (for me) after I ordered the DX5 II. It hasn't arrived yet but I am already thinking of directly sending it back as I'm not a fan of this.

I hope Topping reverses their idea about this.

Google still caches the old description:

May 21, 2026 — Compatible models D50 III, D90 III Discrete, Centaurus, DX5 II, D900, DX9 Discrete, E50 II, DX1 II. Supports Win10 and Win11.

You’ll note they didn’t change the update date. So it would appear they are going to quietly kill Topping Tune. Bonus for not being able to revert to a software version that still works with it. That’s frustrating to say the least.

You can still use Topping Tune with the DX5 II:

I just wouldn't also use the Home web control app.

With the qualification that is a Mac. Anybody with Windows want to claim success?

I just wanted to point it out in case someone were unaware.

Regardles of whether it works or not at present, another firmware update and it might not, and the change could come without any notification from Topping.

I seriously dislike that concept aswell, I got the DX1 II assuming Topping Tune would be developed to something good from what it is now. Then again, this seems to be a trend - Got Logitech MX for Mac, and I seriously dislike their software concept even as a local App. Exploring the market for wired replacements, it seems like most brands are using a web interface for modification/key allocation, and "all" got bluetooth, rather few are cable only which is what I'm after.

I ended up using iQualize for the DX1II on MacOS, and that was not at all the point when specifically aiming for PEQ.

Oh, I was only adding that they removed the download link :)

I completely understand that :) In that case, it could be a matter of waiting to hear feedback from other users, and simply not progressing with FW updates beyond a certain point if it means losing access to Topping Tune.

There's also the Home app for Android/iOS devices, which has about as much functionality as Topping Tune, and might not be as invasive as the Home web app is perceived to be. I've also used eqMac with a great deal of success before Topping Tune was a thing on MacOS.

I'm not really worried about firmware through Topping Home, but the (web)app / web combo is poor, and by the looks of it, the on device wrapapp would be just as bad as going through their home website. If worried sharing info when updating firmware via Topping Home, one could always perform a factory reset of the dac prior to update. Not elegant, but would assume it works.

I won't be using the Android app at all. As stated, I got the DX1 II, which (thankfully) doesn't have bluetooth, and I am moving away from "desktop/cellular integration".
