Topping DX5 II

Lurking member here, Im using Dx5II for 2 weeks and wanted to share some thoughts about Chi-fi especially Topping: short - extremely good value, state of the art performance.

My backgound: Im into headphone and this hobby when I was a overseas student in Sydney, back in 2009, my daily travel buddy was Koss porta pro with the the first iPhone (2G). Then I got into Head-fi, bought a Westone UM3X and started the hobby throughout the years 2010-2013:
- LCD2 v1
- Schiit Lyr v1 with some tube rollings I hunted Siemens rare nos stuff on ebay (sold to fellow hobbist in Malaysia) - back in those days trading on Head-fi was 99% of trust, very rare to get scammed. We usually sent payment first by paypal gift.
- bought Violectric V800/V200 stack (then sold to a local fellow hobbist) with 1/3 of loss after 1 month. I was dissappointed by Violectric QC, nothing special in sounding.
- at that time frame NwAvGuy was pretty active on HF threads with his awesome Objective amp, but good and reputated DIY builders were mostly interested in building beta22.
- bought a stack of beta22 & sigma22 from a DIYer in US. We only discussed via pms, very honest and fascinated builder, got it shipped from US to Sydney for total $1300 and its still running great til today!
- bought NAD M51, it was a bomb in 2013, still on my rack today - $1300 AUD from a Aus retailer.
- bought Fostex TH900 ver1 shipped from Japan for almost $2k
- bought Zana Duex v1 from a HF US fellower, it arrived safe and sound, but TH900 was not a synergy with the legendary ZD v1, so I sold it to a local friend, kept the beta22 stack until today!
----------------------------------------------------------
I arrived home late of 2013, and stopped the hobby in 2016 for a few reasons: got married, family, kid was born, dogs and work, plus my TH900's left driver got faulty due to humid condition and I couldnt find a solution to fix it, so I pack my stuff (M51, Beta22 stacks, Audiophilleo2 & purepower and some expensive cables - yes, I couldnt find the differences but I were fooled by reviews and stuff that time - no regret tho, its a journey and experiences).
-----------------------------------------------------------
Late of 2025 I changed my job and have some time to enjoy music again, so I started with IEM again, just by think thats enough for entertainment, I could use it at office also at home, bought the ThieAudio Monarch MKIV and experienced some dongles. Did satisfy myself due to comfortable reason so I do some deep researchings to update the info also the stories behind why NwAvGuy dissappeared from the scene and how he left a legacy to the community, which we have here, Amir and ASR to honor that philosophy.

And I read a lot of ASR and debates with the helps of Claude. My belief were DAC do have some subtle differences, but you know, from my young age of into this hobby, I failed to distinguish my DAC, but yes I can 100/100 did tell the differences between my amps because one was a tube, and another was SOTA solid state one, they did sound differently but back in those days (2012-13) there were no one measured those stuff, placebo and sighted reviews were everything.

And when I bought the DX5II I wanted to experience A/B the amp section myself because after all, thats my belief that needed to check. I did A/B sighted test only because I have noone to help me do the proper blind test, but with matching volume, there is absolutely NO differences between the beta22 stack comparing to DX5II. Tested on Denon D9200 with custom EQ on APO. Beta22 & Sigma22 despite the old DIY topology, many owners still appreciated it as one of the best amp ever with proper build, even comparing to thousands bucks amp today it still hold on quite good, Headamp GSX MK2 is the commercial version of beta22 though, I guess same philosophy and more robust build.

DAC wise, NAD M51 was measured okay, but not good in multitone test, but in my A/B test, they sounded the same, no differences.
-----------------------------------------------------------
In summary of my experience, old stuff and the new DX5II coz I wanted to try for myself to see how Chi-fi with great Sinad measurement could compare with SOTA old stuff and I was in awe, surprised and happy because now it is my main "all-in-one" box of daily use. Convenient, superb sound, lots of features (PEQ, remote, power output headroom, 3 common outputs).

For $250 this is a bargain, and I dont care if it would fail/die after 12 months (out of warranty), and Im highly doubt that it would fail that soon, in the worse case I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade for TOTL of Topping for better QC and longevity.

Thousands bucks equipments are what you should pay for the look, the fancy box and its feature or high grade components inside that you are expecting its longivity to last for decades, not the sound it reproduce, because, if they are transparent enough, they should sound the same, dac or amp, they all follow the law of physics.

Thanks Amir and ASR community to help us debunk the audiofool myths and also, Chi-fi to keep the market competitive.

Cheers,
Alex

Cool that you are happy! Might I suggest that we avoid the term Chi-fi? https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/lets-avoid-the-term-chi-fi.18243/

Everyone has their own pov and financing capability I guess. There are people who bought 5 digits for a Chord product or 4 digits for a dac/amp combo then why shouldnt I hesitate if it fails yearly for 10 consecutive years, still in total of 2.5k and future updates of product line, providing I A/B matching level tested they all sound the same on a flagship headphone which is qualified for transparency and details revealing.
I used to think there are subtle differences to justify what I paid for 4 digit products, including cables back when we have no method of measurements. Now its science proof, then I have no reason to go for expensive ones, except for the look.

Second unit died on me yesterday. It started making crackling noises which became louder and louder, leading to unit reboot. First few times it happened a few days ago and it didn't happen quite often, but since yesterday it worsened and now it's 100% time distorted sound no matter the output or the volume. Driver re-installation and firmware update didn't help.

2 units dead in 3 months of daily usage. Nope, no more topping for me. Will be looking for other brands. IDC if they have better products, this level of QC (or lack of it actually) is a no go for me.

Topping is one of those brands that seem to do their R&D in the field, using paying customers as testbed.

Still, they measure well ... SINAD is great ... no problemo then :)

You forgot the quality and support. This product lacks quality. And so far customer support seems very random. Some have great experience, some have very negative experience.

You may have simply lost sight of reality—or lost your focus—regarding this perspective. If you believe that Topping’s quality, quality control, or product lifespan have anything to do with the price point, you are unfortunately quite mistaken.

I recently had the sixth or seventh defective A90D on my workbench; the cause of failure was a matter of saving just a few cents (nothing more) during production by using absolute garbage-tier SMD resistors and ceramic capacitors. It has long been known in the industry—and specifically regarding IT products—that these types of components frequently fail early due to short circuits, often destroying other components or entire circuits in the process.
Repairing them isn't economically viable, often due to the shipping costs the customer would have to cover.
Any reputable manufacturer would acknowledge this as a defect and replace or repair the product for the customer free of charge; Topping does not.

My two Violectric headphone amplifiers—the HPA V100 and V200—are now 15 years old, and experience suggests they will last just as long again. Failures are unheard of, but should a repair ever be necessary, the manufacturer handles it cost-effectively.
With RME, too, a service life of 10–20 years is the norm; failures are rare to non-existent, and their approach to repairs is customer-friendly—just like their support and long-term product maintenance. An RME ADI DAC is a highly reliable device.

Your perspective changes—at the very latest—when you lose an expensive pair of headphones.

My Fostex TH900 left driver failed due to humid condition (Im located South East Asia) when I packed my stuff and left them in warehouse since 2016. When I brought them out, all syns leather from headband and pads were off, it might damaged the driver coil hence resulted in failure. If I put it on use regularly or in a conditioner storage it would be alright.

Yeah I also heard stories about Topping's QC and failure, but every brand has at least a few percentage of failure and they sold a lot.

Violectric wise, my V200/800 stack got scratchs so easily and peeled off small parts, screw holes got damaged after a few opens. I remebered I had to open the V200 amp to change the jumper for gain or something back in 2013. So not really happy with them considering the price of the stack back in 2013.
I have a photo of my setup with Violectric stack back in 2013 along with the Zana Duex & Fostex TH900

How do you feel about a 51% failure rate?

I'll report back when my unit fails. If it fails, I'll try on SMSL or get Topping DX9 with very nice "sunroof" glass. Again, Im not trying to say they have good QC or good reliability. Its just me accepting the chance of getting a failure uni in 12 months of warranty. I bought from their distributor here so its not a big issue to send back for warranty.
If I had to buy it overseas, I would hesitate considering the two ways shipping cost and waiting time.

Have you in your work had any experience with FIIO? I'm seriously considering buying K17 now and I've seen the teardown and build quality looks next level compared to topping. Are they more reliable?

In my personal experience I will try to get a refund after 2nd dead unit and never return to topping. Or at least get a replacement and hope the 3rd unit won't fail. Seriously it's the worst reliability from the over $100 product I've ever had. Both units were new in plastic. Also consider DX5ll heats like it never should. Unlike any DAC I had before, this one gets hot fast and goes way over 40C in 20C room. who knows how hot it's hotspot is.

40 degrees isn't considered to be a high operating temperature for electronics, though.

It's unfortunate that you've had two units fail on you (I had two MX5 units fail on me), but mine was purchased basically on the day it was released, and it hasn't had any hardware problems. Mine also doesn't get much warmer than room temperature (to the touch).

You may have better luck with a different brand of DAC/HPA.

40C is ok for components, I know, but it's hot to touch, not too hot but uncomfortable to keep the hand on it for long time. God knows how hot the components get, it's a closed case so maybe over 100C on hot spot. And that's dangerous territory.

Solid state amp components have life time based on torture working temp like 100-105 degrees celcius in thousands hours, below than that threshold will prolong the lifetime. If it fails due to temp hot spot, its something else. Mine is warm-touchable around 40C, and its way cooler than a class A solid state or tube amp.

For quality components it is. I doubt Topping has highest quality components here.

What input and output are you using when it heats up that much? I mostly use usb in and single ended and xlr out at 38db and in a 27c room at times it seems to only ever rise 2-4c above ambient for me on the outside of it. So it feels a little warm and like others have said way colder than a class A amp and colder then some of my older class D amps.

That being said if I got two duds I would also be looking elsewhere. Or at least looking at purchasing through a different vendor as perhaps they just have had a bad batch in general coming back to the QC.

Are you using 120v or 240v into it?
