My understanding is that the issues with 4.4mm relate to people swapping headphones whilst the unit is on and cables with oversized 4.4mm plugs (the plug on the Sennheiser cable is quite slim and fits nicely in the recess around the 4.4mm socket).
If you are not swapping headphones and your cables fit correctly, then there should be no concern.
My understanding is that the issue relates to a lack of protection against shorts between the conductors for the balanced connection - i.e. it's not a physical problem with the socket itself. This is not an issue for the XLR socket because the conductors do not slide past each other during insertion or extraction. Good idea! Saves wear and tear on the device. It’s what I do. Usually DC voltage on output is a hardware failure, otherwise it should be filtered out by internal filters.Just a thought:

DC on the output is a reasonably common failure mode, such as an output transistor failing short. That's not where it was from in the earlier comments about DC protection tripping though - it was from tracks where the released version contains DC which is arguably a mastering error. In the past most equipment included some sort of DC blocking, whether from having an output capacitor to block it, or a DC servo to get rid of it. Then people started worrying about the cumulative effect of a load of high pass filters, and being DC coupled without a filter became more common.
