Topping DX5 II

Maybe you will not experience this. My suggestion is to power it down by the front panel control before using the power switch on the back or unplugging it.
Not everyone seems to have this issue, but enough have reported it to make me think Topping owes an explanation.

Oh crap, I just ordered this unit 3 days ago :(
I think most of us are doing fine. Just upgrade the firmware directly for fewer problems. I'd probably not use balanced headphones out

Ah, it seems like I'm going to have to return that fancy balanced cable I ordered as well hahah. Thanks for the heads up! I'll let you know if everything works fine from my end.

Thanks so much, I'll defo stick with that process!

If anyone is looking for another USB input to their dac you can use something like hiby uc10.
It's cheap small and do the job

What happened with the balanced output lol? I just bought a fancy 4.4mm silver cable for my Edition XV.
I don't know of any issues with using the balanced output. If there is I would like to know more.

It's been discussed here at ASR, so I'll let AI summarize

"The Topping DX5 II has reported issues with its 4.4mm balanced output, including left-channel distortion, premature hardware failure, and "HP DC abnormal" errors. These issues appear to be a mix of firmware bugs and potential hardware defects, often causing severe distortion or shutting down the unit"

Thank you! I will admit, I should of done my own search, so double thanks!

I couldn't find the entry where you raised your problems. So I don't know what you are experiencing.
However!
I bought mine in December and have been killing it with a power line master-slave switch mastered by my streamer going standby. Never encountered any problems. The unit switches on with all the settings retained. The unit is not connected to a computer however. I only use the spdif inputs.

Just ordered one to upgrade from the Topping DX7 pro, which has been a fiber combo, but lacks some power for my HE6SE v2. I have the hd650 ob the way as well, and worry I'd have the same power issue

Unplug it, plug it back in and it's dead. No display, no response to controls, no audio, no Bluetooth, no usb activity.

Picked up one of these for ~$245 as an "Open Box" on ebay that turned out to still be sealed. I'm thinking it was a customer return. It seems to be a relatively recent build as it came with firmware 2.07 on it. I plan on using it purely as a DAC with PEQ.

Here are some quick thoughts.
  • Build quality is great. Feels commiserate with the price. Feels dense
  • Buttons feel good to use. Nice and snappy.
  • Interface is fast and easy to use, which is surprising given the small size and limited inputs
  • Installing the Topping software was quick and easy.
  • Creating a custom EQ wasn’t hard at all. I was able to easily match the EQ I use in peace without issue.
  • If you want to use the channel balance setting while using the line outs, you have to switch to preamp mode. You can get around this by setting a different preamp value for one side while using EQ, so I wouldn’t call it a huge deal
  • The line outs are somewhat hotter than my Schiit Modius DAC. To get the two DACs to have similar levels I had to use the preamp function on the Topping and lower the volume by around 7.5 dB. This wasn't super scientific as I used an app on my phone and my ears to get them in the same ballpark.
  • I really wish this had an analog input.

Sorry, "Unplug" what. All devices in my system are powered up and down by a master/slave switch except the streamer which is the master as it has to stay active even when in standby mode to listen to the network. So I pull the mains plug from DX5 II at least once a day without any problem. When switched on by reapplying power it starts up in exactly the same configuration it was when the power was pulled by the master/slave switch, hasn't failed even once. My DX5 II is still on firmware 1.93 which won't change until I read here that 2.10 is stable and reliable. When I change the the cabling at the back of the unit I do make sure system is always powered down as a precaution.

You probably meant whatever comes after 2.10 :D

2.07 is stable for me. Maybe worth upgrading to that and skip 2.10 for whatever comes next (which is what I'm doing).

I have had my dx5 II since about January and everything is working fine. I also have the latest 2.10 fw and everything is working fine... I use the rear xlr and the front 6.35 headphones.
