Topping DX5 II

What when you rotate through many new headphones.

Even when I have my presets set depending on my mood and music I tend to add more bass from time to time - think of it like a tone control.

Snorher option could be letting user set up PEQ via interface on the unit itself.
Less comfortable but it would be very welcomed.
Yeah I get that, it's just not ideal and shouldn't need it. You could still set up 5 profiles on PC and move the DAC. I had a look at that app, only one other device is supported or something.

My RME has bass and treble controls, very handy. Mostly use because of different music not because of the speakers.

Can you set it up on the PC then leave it at that?
A good setup should sound good with flat EQ.
I have the Hifiman Edition XV and it definitely needs a bit of EQ, well mostly for bass and 1-2K. My DX5II hasn't arrived yet and I am back on Linux.

Sorry for asking again, but has anybody here ever had the problem of the dx5 ii not showing up in Topping Tune?

That's why I'm also using RME together with DX5 depending on my "use case" lol ;)
I wish DX5 had similar feature.

What's your OS ? Im on linux and it's not showing - as expected, but I can't be bothered to set u p a VM for it

Tried it on both Mac and then on Windows because it wasn't working . The Audio MIDI app is set to 44.1 kHz. Tried different cables and adapters/hubs. Tried the latest firmware and using the latest Topping Tune. Very strange because of all the issues I read about trying to find a solution, this never seemed to be one of them.

My DX5II arrived. No import tax in Europe weirdly enough if you order from the Topping store in China. It came with the latest firmware too.

Hi everyone!

I bought a DX5 II a week ago and I like it a lot so far. Since I use two different sources with my unit daily, using two different USB-B to USB-A cables, it's starting to bother me to unplug and plug the end of the cable to the unit.
I would like to be able to connect to the two sources without having to unplug a cable and plug the other one to the unit.

Will something like a USB B 2.0 switcher like this https://amzn.eu/d/053LvZwy solve the issue? I would connect the Topping to the switcher using the original cable, and then the two cables to both of the sources. It says it's for printers, so I'm not sure I could use it for my HP amplifier, but I haven't found anything that suits my needs.

If it does work, will it affect the sound quality, or the power the DX5 II provides? Also, will I experience problems regarding UAC 1.0 and 2.0? I need both UAC to work properly, in order to use the two sources I connect the DX5 to.

I could buy it and try it out myself, but the fact that many people are having problems with this unit makes me feel super careful with it.

The DX5 II has a dedicated power supply, it is not using the USB-bus for power, as such there should not be any power related issues. As long as there are no grounding issues with any of the devices in the signal chain, there should be no sound quality loss whatsoever.
As long as the switcher works, UAC mode changes are unlikely to be an issue. But if you want to make sure, get one that explicitly supports more recent operating systems.

Also keep in mind that frustrated customers are generally more likely to post about issues if they arise than happy ones. That being said... there has been quite a few more broken units than what I think most people would consider to be normal.

Does anyone know what the small pop noises are when you stop sound playback? I hear it on the line out output but perhaps it's a Linux driver issue or something.

You can also use a USB to SPDIF converter such as the SMSL PO100 on one USB output.

If this occurs using USB input, this is due to the USB receiver chip going into and out of standby, because the system stops and begins sending a signal. Someone in one of the two major DX5 II threads here has found a solution for that for Linux.

A USB switch should work fine. My DX5 II is connected directly my personal PC, but I also use a SoundBlaster X4 for video conferencing and gaming that I switch between my personal PC and work laptop with one of these:

My desktop setup is quite complicated and the switch connects a keyboard, mouse, the X4 and a USB headset to 4 PCs, but the one you linked to should work fine as well.

I haven't tried it with the Topping, but my ancient Windows 7 HTPC used to use this:

It doesn't seem to happen on Windows lol. Yet another reason to not switch to Linux.

This is the sound that happens when the DAC is effectively "going to sleep" when no more data is being detected by the device. Because there are no drivers for MacOS (or Linux), there is no way to set the device to have the data streaming be always on. PC users have the luxury of setting it up that way in the audio control app that comes with the driver, so they don't have to deal with it so much. It is something that has been brought up with Topping several times, I think. It is also not something that is specific to this device, it will happen with most DACs that use the XMOS chip. As it has been mentioned, this only affects the USB input.

On MacOS (and I also suspect Linux), one workaround is to use a separate USB DDC (like a Topping D10s or the SMSL PO100 or PO100 Pro). That is how I have it set up with my desktop system. Alternatively, you can boot Qobuz, and leave it running in the background since it keeps sending a constant stream of data to the DAC, preventing it from going to sleep (or search the forum for the KeepMyMacAudioAlive for a user-built app that does the same thing).
