Topping DX5 II

Maybe the new update introduces excessive "resource" usage that makes the coil whine audible?
Have you tried a firmware downgrade?
Is the noise also audible through the audio outputs, or is it limited to the unit itself, and is it very loud?
I honestly don’t know what to do, I’m terrified, every day a new issue comes up.
I’m tempted to sell mine while it’s still working…
Lol I'm not sure what happened, but after downgrading and updating firmware again back to 2.07 there is not coil whine...

Hi all. Could anyone please explain how to upload peq file for my Sennheiser HD560s and ofc where to find it?
I’d also like to know whether the loaded PEQ configuration would work only when using the DX5 connected to the Mac, or if it would also work in stand-alone mode.
Thanks
You need to configure it in topping tune on the Mac and than put it in the device store as one of the EQ. Afterwards it is standalone

After updating to version 2.07, do all the settings remain or do I have to set them up again, as was the case in the past? Thanks

You will have to do all of your settings again. I forgot to backup my PEQ profiles to the Local Config (I generally do all PEQ adjustments under User Config), so I had to spend some time last night redoing most of it  o_O

I had to do all the settings again, but my PEQ profiles were still there
:)

So far so good, no problems for me, let's cross our fingers!

Have your PEQ settings disappeared?

*Fixed: Several other known issues
*New: DSP crossfeed function

I have the Watchlist add-in configured in Brave to monitor the new Topping 'Firmware' page for updates...

Of course, Topping then post the firmware update for the DX5 II on the 'Drivers & Software' page!

*edit* updated to 2.07 and put all my configs back. Seems to be working fine. I have crossfeed enabled and set to 'convolution' and 'studio', I quite like it.

Everything reverted back to factory after I installed v2.07, so I had to redo my PEQ profiles (I always delete the stock profiles, too).

Nothing in the Local Config disappeared, but all of the User Config profiles were reset back to the stock profiles they install right out of the factory.

Just in case it is not known, Crossfeed won't apply unless you have the sample rate set to 44.1kHz or 48kHz. The volume levels drop when Crossfeed is enabled, and it drops quite heavily when Convolution is selected. Less so with Simple, but there's still a decrease in SPL.

Thanks, is this weird...

I feed my DX5 II from Windows with 24 bits @ 96kHz. When I enabled crossfeed the sound appeared to change (but not alter significantly in volume). The crossfeed icon appeared by the volume on the DX5 II display (showing the C2 setting), so I naturally assumed that crossfeed was enabled and applied.

I then noticed that my phone had connected to the DX5 II via Bluetooth and I realized that I had neglected to disable BT when re-applying my usual config after the firmware update. So I disabled BT from the menu and the crossfeed icon disappeared. I then read your post, switched Windows to 24bits @ 48kHz at which point the crossfeed icon re-appeared and the volume lowered by over 10dB.

And now you have reminded me of the impact of applying crossfeed, I seem to recall that this was mentioned when the crossfeed feature was first discussed in this thread.

I am not exactly aware of what proper crossfeed implementation is supposed to be, but based on the review thread, it sounds like it's not. Using Simple does increase the SPL by a bit compared to Convolution, but it's still lower than if it was off completely. Also Convolution (either Small Room or Studio) sounds weird to me, so I am going to try Simple using the ChuMoy setting for a little while.

I already found one menu bug on this FW (already reported to Topping), but other than that and the possibility that the crossfeed implemenation is buggy, it's been okay for me.

I had the topping windows app running just in case and after switch off/on the eq6 profile was there.

Just hopped on the boat and got my DX5ii (white) yesterday.

Came with firmware v1.76. Loaded up v2.07 last night.

USB > PC > 4.4mm out & 6.35mm out to headphones (Meze 99c & Sony MDR-MV1)
* I did live plug & unplug (alternating 4.4mm and 6.35mm) -> didn't notice any issues
* haven't tried out the rest of the bells and whistles (i.e EQ / Crossfeed etc.)

Hi everyone,
I’m still fairly inexperienced in this area and I’m considering buying the Topping DX5 II.
At the moment I own a JDS Labs Atom Amp 2, and I was wondering if there’s a sensible way to use both together.

Would it make more sense to use the DX5 II on its own, or would there be any real advantage (in terms of power or sound quality) in pairing it with the Atom Amp 2?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is a silly question.

See https://bs2b.sourceforge.net/ for an explanation of the Simple approach, although https://github.com/Wang-Yue/camilladsp-crossfeed makes it clearer what the differences are between the options on offer. The Convolution will be using a combination of a generic HRTF and a room model for a more complete rendering of stereo to binaural, but how effective it is for you will depend on how closely your personal HRTF matches the generic one. It'll be interesting whether they start offering more tuning options for the Simple approach, and/or custom uploads for the Convolution to use your own HRTF and room model

For sound quality, there'd be no advantage to keeping your Atom Amp in the chain.

But do consider the E50II and D50III if you see no reason to change the headphone Amp.

Those two are purely DACs, with the same PEQ that the DX5II has.

I'd add that DX5 II has a far better remote than D50III which goes to sleep quickly and takes time to wake up as it's based on BT

I'm not a fan of the Convolution HRTF. My suggestion for people is to find a stereo source with voice only centered in the mix. It colors female vocals much too much for me. Also the delay for the room versus the studio sounds nice with instruments, but not so much for voice as they usually have some reverb already in the mix and this just doubles down on it.

Obviously you mileage may vary based on preference and music types.
