Topping DX5 II

Updating from 1.78 didn't delete the PEQ presets, reseted everything else.
Yeah the newest firmware was the first not removing the custom profiles iirc. Also you have this factory reset option to remove everything or keep stuff

Just noticed that v1.93 was now available for my machine today so I upgraded from the existing v1.78
As others have noticed it did not reset the the EQ profiles (neither did the upgrade to v1.78 from the v1.71 it had when it was delivered)

Not sure if it is only on this latest firmware but I tried out the Balance control which seemed to work fine UNTIL you changed the EQ profile when for several seconds it produced a blast of high volume from the left channel before settling to the correct adjustment - nearly fell off the chair!

Putting the Balance setting back to zero thankfully put things back to normal but I hope this bug can be resolved as I like to use a slight R/H biased balance.

I also note the 4.4mm balanced socket is a bit fussy, I have 2 headphones with that connection - a Fiio FT1 which works no problem and a Fiio FT5 which had to be inserted and then slightly pulled back out to get the proper sound in the left channel? Both plugs look basically the same and both work fine in my Topping L70?

I have now cured it by placing a small silicon ring insulator (from one of my vaping coils) over the plug on the FT5 which stops you pushing it in to the mechanical stop point. Luckily this still also works in the Topping L70 as well. A bit disappointing though.

I had a similar issue with a 4.4mm balanced plug. Mine was too chonky for the cutout that is around the output.

I ordered a cable with a smaller 4.4mm outer casing and I haven't had any issues since.

Yes, it is a bit annoying - you think they could get it right, after all the 4.4mm format has been around a while!

Obviously your plug would not insert fully whereas it seems mine was going in too far as to get the proper connection you actually had to slightly pull it back out and you could feel it latch into the indents. Not helped that the socket is recessed into the front panel - why not make it flush, very odd.

I've just order a new OpenHeart 16 core 4.4mm cable so I hope it fits OK - I have the same cable terminated in 4 pole XLR and that is excellent so I hope the 4.4 mm version gives the same performance.

I am also a bit disappointed that you can't select individual outputs for headphones which seems strange - on my Topping L70 I can leave all three outputs connected to headphones and just select to output to the one I want. With the DX5 ii both balanced outputs are on so, for example, if I am listening to my HiFiman Edition XS, which does need a bit of wellie to make it sing then I have to disconnect whatever is connected to the other balanced output for fear of over driving it. Not really convenient.

I very much like the built in PEQ (although programmed from the PC) which you can change from a single button press and hands down embarrasses the version on my Eversolo DMP-6 with pre-set frequencies as well as the ease of changing the DAC profile.

However, if the next update does not cure the balance problem I described above I fear it might be getting returned.

Just bought this thing, and also new Audeze LCD-2C. Before used "fast-food" grade Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro. In other words, a noob in this field.

After buying the Topping DX5 II - should I use high or low gain with the LCD2C? High sounds better I think, but I read Low has lower distortion or something...

Also, don't change the SPDIF mode to 2 when the headphones are plugged in on fw 1.78, the audio bug nearly ruptured my ear drums.

Hi, not sure about the higher distortion on high power and I don't have any experience with the LCD2C but I would just suggest using whichever setting yours ears prefer and gives you a comfortable and sensible range for the volume control.

If there is a different distortion level between the two settings I doubt it would be discernible.

The white version is a good choice, same as mine, and smarter than the boring silver or black I think!

I have a Meze 99 classics v2 and a DX5 II. Is the 4.4 OPENHEART cable good quality?? or just a fake?

It seems to be excellent quality - ordered from AliE and came in about 6 days. It looks identical to the one I bought last year from the same supplier except that one was for my Hifiman Edition XS and had the XLR termination. I bought the 4.4mm version for my Fiio FT1 and I think it is an improvement over the stock cable.

I think they are the best sounding cables I have tried, without spending a fortune on snake oil soaked ones, and I think you can see why they are a little more expensive than run of the mill versions. I paid about £21 for my 16 core 1.4 metre version.

The 4.4 plug is a nice snug fit in the DX5 ii and it latches in with a positive feel. (I should be on commission:cool:)

and which cable should I get for my Meze 99 v2 from Alia? xlr 4pin or 4.4???
XLR 4-pin and 4.4mm provide exactly the same experience. Its more a question of compatibility with different devices. For a DX5 II, either will do the job.

Personally I prefer 4.4mm for its small footprint on my desk.

still such a question. are the 4.4 and xlr outputs symmetrical??
If you are referring to whether they are balanced or differential, yes, they are.

In case @satanicek666 isn't a native English speaker - electrically the 4.4mm and XLR outputs are the same. There is no difference which connection you use. The only difference is the mechanical socket that connects to the headphone plug.

Possibly, given the slightly suspect 4.4mm socket on the DX5 ii then the XLR termination may prove the more reliable in the long term?

Of course the only limiting factor is that both 4.4 and XLR sockets are switched in all the time when you select "Balanced" which means it is not ideal to leave two sets of phones connected - which I got used to on my Topping L70 as they were individually switched.
