Topping DX5 II

For some Topping audio equipment models, the manufacturing date can be determined by the first four digits of the serial number. For example, for my Topping DX5 II, the date can be found by the number 2507—that's July 2025.
For mine, it starts with 2504 so April 2025. I bought it in June already. Maybe your issue is with a bad batch in June. I have no way to test mine currently as I would need a cable for that.

What distortion?
There is a crackle/fuzz to low notes in the left channel above anything but low volume. The song will be going along fine, then bass hits and it sounds like the left driver is broke. The headphones themselves are fine with other dac and amps. SE and RCA LO still work though.

I received mine late August but it starts 2510.

Interesting I’ll keep an ear out. So far no issues like that knock on wood I’ve left mine on for days just to stress test

That sounds like a poor connection that gets exacerbated by vibration

More of an assembly defect rather than any of the chips or electronics

How many devices can you connect over Bluetooth to the DX5 II?
I can’t see it with my iPhone over Bluetooth. Is there a way to reset the Bluetooth on the DX5 II?

There's no function to only clear the Bluetooth history.

A factory reset is available in the menu.

I found how to pair the Bluetooth. I successfully connected to my device.
You have to long press the brightness button on the remote to enter pairing mode.

I can confirm this works on firmware 1.78.

I'm using LO RCA as well as HPA Balanced.
This ALL Output option is not something I use on the regular but it's good to know that it does in fact work simultaneously, at least with this firmware.
I upgraded to 1.78 today and still no dice. Output is set to ALL and no signal from SE out. When I change to LO SE then I get signal. Is there something in my settings?

Topping Tune update V1.14 is also available on macOS too now

Where can I give feedback to the team? The low/high gain is driving me crazy.

I have a general question. How does volume control work on dacamp devices like DX5 ii (or DX9 etc) when connecting headphones? Is it done in digital domain (bit reduction) or in the analog domain (voltage reduction)?

I know DX5 ii has preamp functionality, which is for speakers. My question is specifically for headphone listening when connecting directly to it.

It is 32 bit digital reduction from what I understand. No potentiometer or stepped relay like the A70pro

From a technical standpoint, is it possible to have analog volume control on DAC/amp combo devices? It should be theoretically possible right?

The UX/UI design from the Topping app is really bad. Holy sh*t!!
It doesn’t feel intuitive and native on macOS. Before purchasing the Topping, I was interested in the JDS Labs Element IV. I conducted some research and read reviews.
The PEQ software of JDS Labs is exceptionally polished.
Why can’t Topping offer a level of polish comparable to JDS Labs’ PEQ software?
I don't know if JDS software is stable though.

From a theoretical standpoint, wouldnt that measure better? Because digital volume control is not bit perfect?

It's not that simple.

Personally, I would not worry about it and I certainly would not chase after 'bit perfect', especially on a device which offers DSP PEQ (which will change all the bits!)

Simplified: you take 16bit input data, attenuate it by 96dB (16bit) with a 32bit system, and still don't lose one bit of actual data. Take 24bit data and do the same, and you still got 16bit left at -96dB volume. That's a (theoretical) super high resolution for such a tiny signal.

It's more complicated of course, but that's the basic reality. As long as the volume control is properly implemented, it's essentially perfect.
