Interesting to see so many people having issue with DX5 ii. I got mine about a month ago and I am funnily enough not able to update it's firmware as my PC keeps telling me the device doesn't have enough space for the firmware file. So that means I have been using it the way it came out of the box. And I have to say my experience has been flawless. I have used plenty of EQ and moved it between devices. Everything seems to save correctly and apply correct profile under any circumstance with no anomalies.
Maybe for those with issues it's worth to try an older firmware?

Is it permanently connected to your PC? Fully close topping tune (don’t allow it to default to minimize to the notification area). Power off the device. Power it on. Load topping tune. Upload 10 profiles to the device. Fully close topping tune. Power off the device. Power on the device, load topping tune and check the profiles stored in the device.

As for why you can’t load the firmware are you properly extracting the bin file from the archive? Drag just the bin file onto your desktop. Now drag that file into the device when it is in DFU mode.

I see what you mean now. I had 5 EQ presets. Did the whole power off and on thing and my 5 presets remained. I then added 5 more dummy ones, closed the Tune and rebooted and saw that my 5 dummy presets were gone but the 5 original ones I had remained. Tried again with only 1 extra dummy preset and that one stayed after reboot. Maybe something's wrong when you use all 10 EQ slots?

I’ve had the same issue with fewer than 10 slots. I just suggested using 10 to maximize the chance of the error.

Thanks for the heads up.

6. What's updated

• Fixed: The issue that the gain may be amplified by 20dB when switching EQ.

• Fixed: Several other known issues.
Topping didn't update the website from the 1.76 firmware. From the archive file itself:

V1.78 (October 27, 2025)

*Fixed: Abnormal sounds after PEQ configuration
*Fixed: Several other known issues
---------------------------------------------------

Those "abnormal" sounds were clipping from pushing the gain across all the filters.

I had read about issue using SPDIF on topping dacs from a TV in these forums before. Something related to the dac expecting cleaner signal and television sets typically outputting less than perfect optical audio. Apparently for earlier models you could request a different version of firmware from support that could make it work reliably.
Now, I noticed DX5II manual have this setting that I attached a picture of, is this related? Would this be okay dac to use with TV (with pc usb use, not tv only)

This is the setting you need for it.
Often, the problem with TVs is that they don't output a standard SPDIF signal; this has often been the case with Samsung and LG TVs.
You'll have to try it out.

There aren't really any problems with USB.

Thanks for the heads up.

Here is the correct update from the file itself. Thanks @Timbo2

V1.78 (October 27, 2025)

In my case, the PEQ filters changing to -12dB still happens with 1.78.
1) Create User PEQ - DX5 ii works fine 2) Turn off PC and DX5 ii 3) Turn on both 4) Crackling sound from speakers and PEQ filter show -12dB.
?????

When I visit "Topping Store" I find something confusingly disorganised and I am greeted with this text on DX5 II product page.
Firmware.jpg

Well, it might be me, but this sounds to me like: "Many more to go in the future!"

That said I would never buy a device with this kind of track record in China under Chinese law. (This might happen even via Amazon.)
If broken, I am probably asked to send it back to Guangzhou, which is a non starter of any support.
Either I can buy in EU or I will not buy at all.
And before that, this mess has to be cleared up. For this it is not a good sign that it seems that they document neither the bugs nor the fixes. But updates keep coming like surf at the beach.

Have you updated Topping Tune? If so, you need to close T T in the bottom right corner tab. Then restart T T. Topping hasn't completely fixed the 12 dB error, which is very
frustrating.

For Mac users, Topping Tune 1.09 is finally available:

Sample size of 1 and possible operator error on my part.........

I don't own the relevant Topping gear but downloaded Topping Tune 1.09 for MacOS to look at the user interface.

I could not quit the application and the application would not let me restart or shut down the computer with the application running.

I manually shut down the computer. Upon restart, the app was no longer running and could be moved to Trash for deletion.

EDIT - '2018' Mac mini Intel i3 on MacOS 15.6.1

Oh sorry to read that.
The app is working fine on mine, although first time I ran it I lost my settings. Anyway I created again filters and I could save the them with steps of 0.1db.
I also switched on and off the DX II and exit and reopen the Topping Tube and PEQs were still there in a correct form.
I have a Mac mini M1 with Tahoe OSX

There seems to be some people who can write code here, so, a question:

Is there any way to absolutely, fail-safe, hard-code levels and let them be?
Cause we're not talking gear here, gear come and go, we're talking ears and we have to live a lifetime with them.

And if so, can this people with the above skills take it on them and share it with these companies for community's shake?

Thanks in advance!

You would have to store the levels in some sort of memory that can not be altered by the software on the DX5 II or Topping Tune. It could be a constant value in the DX5 II firmware, but then a firmware update could change the value...

The term 'hard coded' tends to get banded about, but no code is really 'hard' unless it has been encoded in physically immutable storage (e.g. ROM) or the the architecture of a microchip (even the microcode that runs modern CPUs is updatable these days).

You could configure the PEQ using a set of jumpers, which the DX5II reads on startup.

Would be tedious AF, but extremely resilient.

But this really should not be necessary. Other brands have long since figured out how to reliably store and load EQ parameters in hardware (RME).

Hi,

Could you please provide me with a comprehensive beginner-friendly guide on the topic of PEQ, including its workings, benefits, and other relevant information?
It seems to be complicated at some point. I see so much people hyped when there is PEQ involved in a product. What is the difference between normal EQ?
