Topping DX5 II

I recently received my Topping DX5II DAC.
This may be a stupid question.
After looking at all the headphone reviews, I settled on ordering a pair of DCA aeon RT closed headphones.
(Stupidquestion) how do I go about setting up the equipment for DAC to bring out the best sound on the headphones and while I am at it how do I setup up the DAC to accommodate my q150 Kef speakers.
Thanks in advance for humbling this old man.

Hi @Medsca! Welcome to ASR.

how do I go about setting up the equipment for DAC to bring out the best sound on the headphones
Install Topping Tune, connect to your DX5II, then copy the EQ parameters from here into Topping Tune (Frequency, Gain, Q factor).

Afterwards, put on some music and follow the instructions in the PDF ("Adjust gain of band x to preference...") until it sounds nice.

and while I am at it how do I setup up the DAC to accommodate my q150 Kef speakers.
Honestly just follow the user manual: https://dl.topping.audio/um/dx5_ii.pdf

Don't be surprised, the first 19 pages are in Chinese, but everything in there is written once again in English from page 20 onwards.

It for example explains how to switch inputs and outputs, store different setting presets, and manage your EQ profiles.

One thing that you can do specifically for your Q150 is load the following EQ correction:

Code:
Preamp: -2.5 dB

Filter 1: ON LS Fc 106 Hz Gain +2.53 dB Q 0.32
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 143 Hz Gain -1.57 dB Q 1.13
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 584 Hz Gain +1.60 dB Q 0.60
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 844 Hz Gain -2.83 dB Q 2.61
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 1220 Hz Gain -1.64 dB Q 2.62
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 1594 Hz Gain +1.91 dB Q 1.82
Filter 7: ON PK Fc 4645 Hz Gain +0.57 dB Q 2.64
Filter 8: ON PK Fc 9372 Hz Gain -2.06 dB Q 0.98
Filter 9: ON PK Fc 14965 Hz Gain -2.40 dB Q 0.96

Here's how that affects the estimated in-room response (meant to slope down):

Thank you very much. The information you provided is very helpful.
I will be sure to follow your guidance.

Topping Tune 1.09 is available. However, you need to update through your existing application. It's not on Topping's website.

Channeling? Did they fix the 0.5 db gain limit?
I haven't played with it as my DX5II isn't connected to my PC. I have to physically walk the device to my PC to load PEQ curves.

If you ask me to guess I would highly doubt it. My assumption is this will never be fixed, but I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Worst case for the 0.5 limit is that you want to set it at x.25 or x.75. So at most a 0.25 deviation. I think they will fix it eventually but until then I am not concerned about 0.25.

It's been fixed in the v1.73 DX5 II firmware.
Nope, it has not been fixed. It was mentioned in the changelog, but it does not work. So it is true that is fixed in the firmware, the problem still persist on Tune Topping software.

Not sure exactly which version of the DX5 II's firmware or Topping Tune software fixed it but with firmware V1.76 and Topping Tune V1.09 it does indeed work

Oh but that’s a good news finally!
Can you confirm that you can save on device a PEQ in steps of 0.1db? To be sure you need to close and reopen Tune Software and check that the PEQ in the DAC has been really saved in 0.1db steps. That is the only way to be sure 100%. If you only save without double checking, it looks like it works but it does not.

Unfortunately Tune Software for Mac has not been updated, it is still version 1.06.

Yeah exactly this is what happens. Previously it would floor it to nearest 0.5 dB but now it stays on the correct values. So in the config below 9.3, 3.4, 1.8, 3.9 all stays correct after restarts for me. I also measured the RCA output earlier also for decrements of 0.1 dB and the output did correctly go down for each step. Unlike previous versions where the output would be the same for values in the range 1.0-1.4 dB (since they round down to 1.0).

Turn off the device with the rear switch, turn it back on... and see what happens.

Yeah the settings stay after restarts even with the rear switch. But there is a new bug in Topping Tune 1.09 for me where it shows gains multiplied by 5 when starting after restart that requires reopening Topping Tune to fix. But it seems to only be in Topping Tune as the audio is fine.

Not quite,
1) Turn off POWER UP / AUTO RUN in the Topping Tune settings...
2) Then turn off the computer and DX5 using the rear switch...
3) Turn them back on so that T T does not load during startup ,
4) turn on PEQ with the remote control
5) Turn down the volume. Connect your headphones ... you will hear what happens.

Huh yeah I haven't heard this before but the sound becomes "tinny". Is that what you mean? It goes back to normal when starting Topping Tune even though Tune shows the bad 12 dB gain values.

In my case, it added 12 dB of bass... everything returns to normal after turning on T TUNE.

I managed to record it happening here. At the 10 second mark is when I started Topping Tune and it set the correct audio again
It's definitely a software bug. Just like in my case and probably in the case of all users.
