Topping DX5 II

Nothing wrong with the SMSL RAW MDA1. Works absolutely fine here. The HP-amp has plenty of power to drive my DCA Aeon RTs.
I'm delighted for you.

Topping tune after updating to 1.08

The DX5II has interesting behavior. Maybe it's just my unit. When it's turned on and paired with a computer via USB or COAX, ( DAC MODE ) but no signal is audible. I mean, no music, just silence. The DX5 gets significantly warm as soon as something starts playing... after a few minutes, the device gets much cooler. I have a conspiracy theory. Maybe the DX5II is listening to what's going on and sending the data to China? :) Just kidding. But when... you expect the DX5 to be very warm, it gets cold.

Hey everybody. I have just received my unit and everything seems to be working fine, but I am unable to update the firmware.
Everything I try, following the steps exactly, it says "This file has properties that can not be copied" and then it just says "Unknown File" in the Topping drive.

I tried some methods suggested earlier in this thread, like copying the topping file to the desktop before copying it to the drive, but nothing is working.

Apparently, my current firmware is 1.30.

Edit: Alright, I could fix this by doing the update on my laptop. No idea why it worked on that but not from my pc.

I was watching a movie on a website. While I was watching, an ad started playing that was twice as loud as the movie itself. I actually jumped at the sudden change in volume.
I have a question: doesn't the DX5II have a "Loudness" feature that could smooth out such abrupt transitions? Or maybe there's something similar, but with a different name?

What you are looking for is probably not loudness (contour), but normalization.
I doubt any consumer DAC/preamp does it, but if so, the manual should state it.
Youtube theoretically has this, but only for a part of their videos...

My defense against such annoyances is a good adblocker (µBlock Origin).

I have Adguard, and it handles any ads perfectly. But this is a different story. There was an ad for some casino embedded right into the video. And the volume difference between the video and the ad was exactly 2x. It's too much, especially if you watch it at night.

Ah OK... But if it's part of the video itself, there will be IMHO no way to get rid of it, except of downloading the video and cutting it away. (corrected, see posts below)

One could load a limiter VST plugin into a plugin host. That would prevent volume shocks from mid roll ads.

There are some audio interfaces that can host plugins internally (e.g. Merging Anubis, Neumann MT48).

Now its not exactly foolproof but there is a browser plugin for it, its called Sponsorblock, it simply skips the embedded ad portion of the video. Seeing as it does the same thing as an adblocker, you should consider that it hurts the creator's livelyhood in the same way an adblocker does.

The real crime is the uploader not taking their time to check audio levels for different segments.

I haven't tried this, but it looks like you can set limiters (on Windows) with Voicemeeter...

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about this plugin.

Alright, two issues I'm dealing with....one is VERY strange.

So I'm using Optical and USB. I have some slight audio stuttering issues when I first start use optical, but it goes away after a bit or by listening to a youtube video. Apparently a common issue with TV's optical outputs into dacs.

The other...MUCH stranger issue I'm experiencing is when I switch from Optical to USB. Rarely, the audio on USB will sound different. Like, everything would sound heavier; it is EXTREMELY noticeable with male vocals. When I switch back to optical and then back to USB again, it goes back to normal. Making the DX5 II go into standby and then turning it back on also fixes it. It's nothing too problematic, but it is one of the strangest things I've ever experienced with a dac.

Anyone experienced anything similar?

Which firmware version do you have?

Latest firmware, 1.72. Problem happens when switching from BT back to USB as well.

EDIT: The PCM on screen also seems to change from 96 kHz to 88 kHz when the problem happens...and then back to 96.0 when it's fixed.
