Hi everyone,

I recently noticed a strange but consistent behavior with my Topping DX5 II, and I’m wondering if this is a known trait of this unit.

System Setup:

• DAC: Topping DX5 II

• Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7b

• OS: Windows 11

• Playback Software: MusicBee (WASAPI Exclusive mode) & YouTube (Chrome/Edge)

• Connection: USB directly to motherboard (no hub)

The Behavior:

• A very small “click” or “tick” sound occurs when seeking (dragging the progress bar) during audio/video playback.

• It occurs about 50% of the time when seeking.

• The sound is very subtle, like a light electronic "tick," but noticeable through my MSR7b.

• It does NOT happen when:

• Pausing / Resuming playback.

• Switching tracks normally.

• Using my wireless headset (Logitech G733).

What I’ve tried:

• Switching MusicBee output modes (WASAPI Exclusive vs. Shared).

• Adjusting buffer settings.

• Trying different USB ports.

• Updating/reinstalling drivers.

My Questions:

1. Has anyone else experienced this with the DX5 II or other ESS-based DACs?

2. Is this considered expected behavior when the audio stream is interrupted and re-locked during seeking, or could it indicate a USB communication/driver issue?

3. Since the MSR7b is quite sensitive, I’m trying to determine if this is just a hardware characteristic (like the Mute circuit engaging) rather than a defect.

Would appreciate it if anyone with the same DAC or a similar setup can share their experience. Is this normal?

Thanks!

It clicks if I pause/resume, next track on youtube
It doesnt click when playing on foobar (dsd or 16b flacs)
So I guess its windows driver stuff, no big deal.

Try a few other media players with everything else the same. They vary, in terms of producing noise.
Try FB2K - I've no idea if it's silent on your PC, but is on mine.

Sounds like a sound buffer issue, mostly software or driver related. I'm no specialist but I have it too but it's subtle and I don't care. It's a $300 product made for home use, not a $30000 professional device. If you have access try different buffer size and check your frequencies, maybe use 48khz instead of 44.1 for video.
