Topping DX3 Pro+ Review (DAC & Headphone Amp)

I use now the app "Wavelet" and the EQ-settings from oratory1990 for my headphones, which I can transform by crinical-tool to wavelet-files. Nice tool-chain.

I ordered me some iem-headphones for 80$ and I really surprised/happy about the sound which I can listen when I am outside, now.

can I use this device to do USB to SPDIF for my genelec?

just partly digital adaptation to digital?

the volume will not work, will it be my PC that will make volume?

I should have bought this TOPPING DX3 PRO instead of D10S because it could have been used for my headphones ....

Which filter is best on the DX3 Pro+? Is 1 best as someone here says "the most correct, i.e. according to the underlying math (flat frequency and phase response and infinite attenuation after half the sample frequency (brickwall)), is F-1.".

Is that right?

Hello friends! I replaced my broken loxjie d20 with dx3 pro+ and it seems that the volume level on it is much quieter than on d20. On d20 comfortable volume was 10-15 units out of 40, on dx3 pro+ it is -40-25db for dt770pro 80ohm at high gain, for artti r2 32ohm it is -50-35. On the linear output at the same volume of the power amplifier -35-25db. From -99 to ~-80-70db complete silence. Please tell me, is this normal?

Hi @amirm ,

First of all, i would like to thank you for all the efforts you put in reviewing all the audio gear, i've learned a lot thanks to them and thanks to your YT videos.

I have a couple of questions regarding my Topping DX3 pro+ which i'm using as an external dac hooked to my cd players either by spdif or coax and then via RCA to my stereo amp. Should i use the topping as a DAC (very loud and have to lower the volume on my amp) or as a pre-amp (able to control the volume) Does the pre-amp add coloration or distortion ? Will coax or spdiff affect jitter ? which will be best ? both my cables are 3meters and entangled with all the wires..
Thank you very much for your answer and keep up the good work boss.

N.B: if you could review the Fiio DM13 and The new moondrop discdream that will be grand.. ( too bad they don't run on normal batteries and have no eq)

Take care !!

Hi @SamirS! Welcome to ASR.

Does the pre-amp add coloration or distortion ?
It does not.

Will coax or spdiff affect jitter ?
Not in a way that matters

which will be best ?
Optical, since it provides electrical isolation and can break ground loops.

N.B: if you could review the Fiio DM13 and The new moondrop discdream that will be grand..
Amir reviews whatever ASR members send him. He doesn't decide what gets reviewed.

If you want to see reviews of certain products, consider buying and sending them to him.

Hi @staticV3, Thx for your prompt reply and answers and thank you for welcoming me !!

For the portable cd players i'll wait, it will take forever and will be to costly to send them from europe :)

Thanx a bunch !!

Send it to me :)
I haven't bought any yet  :p I have a Phillips portable cd player which i bought from a thrift shop in Geneva for 8 CHF, and it sounds muddy and the anti-skip is on all the time, even though it has an off switch !! where in Switzerland are you ?

That's great !! Would you be interested in reviewing my cd players and my amp? i can bring them to you someday.. i'm familiar with your work and efforts too and i know that you're into cd players ;)

Yes sure that’d be fun! And an opportunity for you to test one of mine at home, maybe. Let’s see how we can make it happen, I’ll PM you.

I bought the DM13, non-Bluetooth, and the Moondrop Discdream 2 ULTRA too. Review in 2 or 3 weeks when they arrive ;)

can anyone with the latest firmware, check if you have on the factory settings menu (don't know if factory or normal settings), 2 modes for the SPDIF input? DX7 have 2 of them that solve a lot of problem with some devices, last time I checked, the dx3 only had one

latest firmware is 1.28 from may 2024

nevermind, I got one, there's still only a single spdif mode, and that mode gives problems with a lot of products using optical input. Topping sent me a 1.29 firmware, but still have the same problem.

avoid this device if you plan to use it with optical input until topping solves it, as with usb input, the device have like 30/50ms extra of latency over optical cable, which makes it unusable for some things like gaming.

Greetings fellow audio folks :)

I am having an issue with the topping DX3 pro+ I've just purchased and was hoping maybe someone here with more experience might be able to help.

I have purchased the Topping to be able to drive my Beyerdynamic DT1770pro (first generation 250ohm) on a second work desk. On my primary desk I am running a schiit stack (modi2 and magni2).

Now, what surprised me a lot, is the sound is actually quite different and I have to admit, I prefer the sound of the schiit stack by a lot.
I am no Audiophile, and I am only listening to spotify on a windows machine (no fancy high-res or ASIO stuff). For me its hard to describe the differences, since I am no Headphone-guy, but I would say the Topping sounds WAY sharper and more zingy and klicky, so things like Horns, high hats or female voices start to hurt my ears at way lower listening levels, which overall I would describe as way more "annoying" somehow.
Something else I have noticed, I can only describe as the Music being more "claustrophobic"...like as if everything is happening in a way smaller room. The third topic is the sound of the bass is very different: Where, for example Kick-drums seems to have more initial impact on the Topping but less overall volume and seem to lack in the very low ends. It feels like a lack of "authority" somehow

Overall I have to say, I am a bit puzzled by my listening test, as I expected both to sound pretty much the same. I am a firm believer in measurements so I am wondering what could be going on here? Listening to some of my favorite test tracks, somehow this "goosebumps-effect" where you just think to yourself "Damn, this sounds sooooo great" is completely gone on the Topping.

-As the topping seems to measure pretty perfect, could it be that the schiit stack is actually "sounded" in a way, that I just happen to prefer on the DT1770?

- Is it possible that the roughly 2x output power of the Magni2 make a difference in the tonality / bass response?

-Could the Topping be "underpowered" for a 250ohm DT1770 ?

-Could there be a windows (11) issue, making the two DACs sound differently? (I've deactivated the "enhance sound" on both and played with the sampling rates)

Thanks guys...I would hate to send the Topping back, especially as the Schiit stuff is almost not available or crazy expensive in europe currently
