Hi.

Has anyone performed the following test?

1> Measure the chassis temperature when the DAC is used with its RCA outputs (SE – single-ended).

2> Measure the chassis temperature when the DAC is used with its 4.4mm TRRRS jack output (BAL – balanced).

What do you observe?

Do people here use it with a PS5? If Yes how is your experience with it?

Ok, have a specific condition where the DX 1 ii will have reproducible abrupt distortion.
If I run REW and try to measure only a channel using Line out, the measurement will end with a static noise (or whatever the TZzzt!! sound is called). If I measure L+R in line out, or if I measure single channel using Optical out, no issue.

Of course, it's also possible that there're other factors.

1st run: Line out, L+R
2nd run: Line out, R only
3rd run: Optical out, R only

See video below. Note: Imgur mutes the audio by default.

I wrote an email to Topping support, this is what they said to me about the popping/clicking noises through RCA:

Dear Edward,

Thank you for reporting this issue and for specifying the affected output, sample-rate changes, and current firmware version.
Slight distortion is normal. If the distortion is significant, you can try the following:

1. Turn both the source and device volumes to maximum, and adjust the volume using the downstream device. If connected to a computer, ensure the computer's system volume, playback software, and driver volumes are all at maximum.

2. If your speakers have sensitivity adjustments, try lowering the sensitivity.

3. Try connecting the RCA output to other devices. If the distortion is still significant after checking and ruling out the above methods, you can send it back for us to inspect.

Best regards,

service

I am using the dx1 II for a few days now and all of a sudden it does a popping sound to my headphones multiple times per second when my pc is turned off.
it also turns itself on every second when I try to turn it off. Also the display goes crazy, as if it's not getting enough power, but it doesn't stay turned off

Anyone have the same problem?

I am thinking of sending it back.

Edit: it was my monitor feeding back power to my motherboard and causing my usb devices to go crazy

I’ve had two but gotten rid of both.

Does anyone else get a background electronic noise on the 3.5mm TRRS mic input of the DX1 II?

In other words, Topping wrote: Do not use the DX1 II as a preamp, but use another preamp to dampen the loud crackling from the DX1 II's RCA output. Great solution to the problem. They wrote to me too.

I do, it's good but seems to have a lower output volume compared to PC.

Using HD490 Pros, balanced cable. On PC w/ high gain, anything past -30dB is extremely loud. On PS5, I have to set it to around -16dB to get the same perceived loudness.
Both PS5 and PC set to 100% OS Volume.

I was hoping the latest firmware update mentioning "Fixed: Low UAC1 recording volume when used with PS5", would fix the output as well, but it didn't.

I overall like the DX1 II. EQ works great. It does get a bit warm though. I do hear pops sometimes but only when adjusting volume and when going from no sound to playing sound. (This is specifically on PS5, I do not get pops on PC when setting the driver to "Always On").

I only use this device with earbuds via the 3.5mm output. I also use a TC-OTG-Y20 Y-cable with a separate 5V power supply to use the OPT input with my TV even when the PC is off.

It's an entry-level model without a mute relay, so I expected some pop noise when turning on the power. But it was much louder than expected, so I did some tests.

The pop noise when turning on the device got much smaller when I set the volume for all three modes (LO+HP, LO only, HP only) to the same or similar levels.

The loud turn-on pop noise happened because I set the two modes I don't use to -99dB, while keeping my main headphone mode at a normal volume.

I'm wondering if this is just my unit, a normal thing in general, or a hardware/firmware characteristic of this device. Has anyone else had this issue?

Almost 10 years have passed, and Topping continues to manufacture devices that are perfect for measurements but garbage for consumer use.

I've spent the last few weeks testing every senario I can with the equipment I have. What I found, in my use, was that I was getting short interuptions in the input when feeding the opt input from my Windows 11 PC. I was able to stop that by changing the OPT input to setting 1 rather than the default setting 2 (as I understand it, this setting uses the base SPDIF connection with no reclocking by a separate DAC clock). When used connected directly to my Crown XLS 1500, there was significant noise using RCA but once I changed to balanced it was quiet. I also got a fairly loud pop when rebooting my PC when connect by RCA to the Crown but it also disappeared with the balanced connections. USB from my PC only had the reboot pop when using RCA, with no other interuptions.
I was able to "break" the DAC by changing things a lot and using various other dac's connected to the OPT output. Eventually, after many changes in settings and equipment, I tried iems with it and although the volume should have been following the DAC setting, I got full output. I tried many different settings and couldn't get it to work properly, so I used the Topping website to reset it to factory defaults and that fixed it. Having said that, I had REALLY been trying lots of different things before this happened but none of the Topping setting fixed it until I reset it.
I'm not going to get too upset about that because when I set it up and leave it alone, it seems reliable and has no problems.
I also tried using it with a Schiit Magneus as a pre-amp and that worked fine but made the sound significantly less detailed. It sounded clean, just lacking in detail and too warm by comparison to the Topping driving the power amp directly which surprised me due to the very high SINAD the Schiit was able to achieve.
I'll be using the Topping directly connected to the Crown for the next while and will post again if anything arises.

were any pops etc loud enough to really annoy, or maybe damage gear downstream?

Besides going to Balanced output, would simply remembering to power amplifiers down be an effective solution?

The noises I got were not significant in terms of damage to downstream gear but the restart click/pop was a bit startling. My amp is very powerful so I am fairly sure most would not have any concerns about damage. When the headphone level was stuck on maximum while displaying -60db, THAT would be a major concern if I had my headphones on properly (they were just loose and I was able to yank them the rest of the way out) when I got the blast of sound, but, again, I had done a lot of things testing for bugs before this happened and after I reset it, it was fine.
In the past, it was always standard procedure to turn off power amp first, then upstream devices and the reverse when starting up, so if used that way any startup/shutdown should not be a problem even with RCA.
