Thank you for the review, good to see the results of @NTTY and manufacturer specs confirmed.
Superb piece of hardware, as it seems.
If only firmware and software were half as good.
 
The hardware itself is as good as you can get at this price.
But for the software, if you mind it, just hold the money for a while, wait for firmware and web driver being updated to a stable stage.
 
Is the peq for all inputs, or just usb?
 
This Topping DX1 II DAC tested as SINAD 121, balanced output, 10 band parametric equalization with web interface and costs US $113.
If these specs are confirmed, it would truly be an innovation.
However, if something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Let's wait and see if the Topping DX1 II is not a golden sample, carefully made to bait and switch from Amir's review. But if it enters production as tested, then it's a whole other story - a very good one.
Let's hope for the best. As I have bought 5-6 Topping products, 4 of which I use myself every day for the last 4-5 years, I am a bit skeptical because they always seem to send me golden samples, which of course is cheating.

The remark about the USB power limitation left me concerned whether connecting it to a streamer with USB cable for high-res (eg dsd512) will work at all.
 
its not really possible to build a golden sample with modern equipment , will the golden sample have a separate manufacturing process and logistics chain .

If the components and PCB are the same your pretty much done ? what fractions of a dB would you get be selecting a special one . performance are often set by NFB loops .

In the old days component values had a bigger influence over the result now you string IC's together with a high level of feedback .
More focus on PCB layout etc .
A tube design with low feedback and transformers involved is prime for building a golden sample ! not a multilayer pcb with IC's ?

Toppings problems are usually QC and support issues . These can explain the price , a god organisations costs real money .
QC can be a serious issue with the provenance of components etc ? what are your supplier of op amps etc ?

To establish if this is the case the product needs to sampled and measured over years from multiple production batches ?

We have two samples that looks similar Amir and NTTY has measured . So the basic product seems legit :) but who knows about the future .
 
I like how it's basically perfect in all measurements wise (including available power) & also contains PEQ & whilst being good value - so much so that I thought about buying one & then I realised I need to have 7.1 channels available to the OS sometimes, so I will have to stick with my SoundblasterX G6 DAC.

If you mean the ground loop I believe it is caused by measuring equipment and would not apply to a home audio system. Not that we should be using unbalanced signal anyway when a higher performing and immune to ground loops balanced signal is right there. :)
 
Also this has an ADC although not measured it may be useful in some applications.
Didn't see an analog input anywhere, or mentioned in the user's manual so what would the ADC be useful for?

The front jack takes a headphone and includes microphone for computer/gaming use.

From the Amazon listing

The 3.5mm TRRS jack also supports standard headset microphones for clear in-game voice chat and recording (up to 192kHz/24-bit input).

@NTTY looked at it.

Activating or not the PEQ does not change anything to the above, which I think is good news too, don't be afraid of using it. That being said, I need to perform measurements when playing with it.


Activating it didn't seem change anything, but he noted he had not full evaluated it.
 
Since this does have mic input from the 3.5mm jack, what would does the unbalanced power look like? Seems using this with a headset (like my pc38x) is one of its intended use cases. It feels like they threw everything except the kitchen sink into this little guy!

The DAC also comes with a USB C to C cable and USB-C provides more power.

USB 2.0 USB-A power: 2.5w
USB 3.0 USB-A power: 4.5w
USB 3.0 USB-C power: 15w

Mine is connected with 3.0 USB-A

But obviously that could help if connected to a tablet or something..

Apart from the complete mess with 44.1kHz (Fosi Merak CD-player does not work at all) it now works fine

Hello Amir,
I really appreciate your fantastic job, and I always read with real interest every new test, but I am wondering why so many DAC and hedaphones amp... I suppose very few people are interested in Headphones amp, I would like to see more speaker tests, amplifier tests, and so on.
