Topping DX1 II DAC & HP Amp Review (NTTY)

I’ve just ordered dx1 II as I needed digital volume control capable device in digital signal chain. I think it’s the only device with such capability right now on the market (with affordable price). Other not expensive solution is to play with Camilla DSP on raspberry pi and some additional peripherals to route the signal and display volume level on the DIY screen.
PEQ is a nice addition but I use Dirac already.

As I have DDRC-24 I see the test use case I could try to confirm whether opt in > opt out in dx1 II has PEQ capability or not.

The equipment chain would be:
PC > topping d10b via USB > coax to toslink converter > dx1 II opt in > dx1 opt out > DDRC-24 opt in > PC via usb (ddrc is bi-directional audio interface via usb).

Then basically I could perform a REW frequency sweep and monitor output signal.

As long as no one could confirm that earlier, I’ll perform such test as soon as I receive my unit (mid July).

I don't have enough optical cables for this, as my usage scenarios don't involve optical input/output.
Out of curiosity, I recently ordered a pair of cables (I'll receive them this week).
The proposed test is quite simple, just to check whether PEQ filters are applied with this connection:
PC -S/PDIF-> DX1II -S/PDIF-> SMSL SU-1 -RCA-> active speakers

Your test looks much more interesting.

Firmware version: 15.69.22.69

I just checked – PEQ is applied if the corresponding option is enabled in the settings. This matches the manufacturer's claims (it may not have worked with previous firmware versions, I haven't verified).

It is working but only USB in to optical out, not optical in to optical out. To be checked and confirmed by other members.

In my test setup, the PEQ works when routed through the optical input and output.

PC —s/pdif—> DX1 II —s/pdif—> SU-1 —rca—> active speakers

I generate a 1000 Hz tone in Reaper, output the signal via s/pdif, record the signal with a microphone (a terribly noisy microphone, but suitable for this case) and analyze the spectrum in Reaper.


00:10 - when the "OPT Output EQ Follow" option is disabled, PEQ is not applied, the spectrum does not change;
00:25 - with the "OPT Output EQ Follow" option enabled, PEQ is applied, the 1000 Hz level is lowered by 12 dB (2 cells on the graph)

If there's a flaw in my methodology or I've misinterpreted the results, feel free to correct me.


UPD: I repeated the experiment, but this time I powered both devices from an external battery — just in case connecting to the web interface, or even having a USB input plugged in (even if inactive), could skew the results. I toggled the equalizer on and off with the remote. The results were the same — the PEQ was still applied.

I measured in REW with 44.1kHz and 48kHz
In both cases the PEQ worked on the OPT output, but the volume setting had no influence on OPT OUT (but on HP OUT it did).

EDIT: In 15.46.22.46 I could not find options to configure the OPT OUT volume settings. I guess that came later. Or I am too stupid.

Good news.
When it comes to volume control for opt out you may need to change that in the setting as by default volume is fixed

Interesting, seems to be the opposite with me. That will deserve another test! Thanks for the info.

Sounds good indeed. Thanks for the time to share! I’ll update my review that it is either a mistake of me, a problem with my unit, or maybe I should have used the interface, not just the ok screen menu?

During my testing, I once encountered a situation where the sound didn't change even with the equalizer enabled. I was unable to reproduce this later, so I'm not sure whether it was user error, a software glitch, or just my imagination. However, since other users have reported various issues with the device, perhaps you've encountered the same thing—especially on older firmware versions?

...it also fixed mine - which had no sound whatsoever with 3.5 mm and USB in, Optical in with MacOS Tahoe 26.X, Arch Linux and a 2024 LG 65 tv. Both Topping Service and I landed on a probable production/hardware failure as they had no reports of a similar issue, and they offered me a replacement unit without waiting for a potential return of my DX1 II, as soon as the probability of cause was established. Needless to say, I have asked them to cease the replacement procedure.

Just have to say, the guys at Topping Store, and the Topping Service department have been top notch, polite, timely active, constructive, forthcoming and pragmatic. Just had a nearly 3 months shebang with CS Megastore for a product with proven defects and had to use outdoor voice to make them honor their obligations and will never shop there again. I have no hesitations with shopping at Topping Store again and will do so.

No issues with sound and settings so far, with firmware 22.83 and my setup. It is plug and play with Arch Linux by the way. Neat.
 
I've upgraded my firmware to 15.83.22.83, and have been streaming music at 48khz for just over 7 hours now without issue. Nice. I would actually recommend this DAC to people now that I personally don't have any issues with it. This level of performance and functionality at the price point that it comes at, is pretty remarkable. If you want to nitpick, you could raise the issue that changing sample rates and some settings can cause an audible pop/click (particularly on the line out), but if you leave it alone, it doesn't do that, so there's that.

If I have a playlist with tracks having different sample rates and bit depths, should I expect pops and clicks? I would be using USB, Thanks.
