Is it possible to use this DAC in preamp mode without losing sound quality at levels around -45 or -40 db?

Common misconception of digital volume preamps.

Unless you can hear hiss out of your speakers at your main listening position that goes away once you unplug the DAC, you will not lose sound quality no matter how low you set the volume.

Yes the DAC's noise floor does not change with digital volume, but if the noise floor is inaudible, then so is any audio data that could've potentially been lost to digital attenuation.

The only way in which an analog preamp coud restore low level fidelity, is by reducing the previously audible noise floor and revealing sound in its place.

No audible hiss -> no lost information.
