So this would be something to replace a THX AAA 789, but not necessarily switch from.

I am in the market for a new DAC these days and was originally considering D90 / A90, but there really isn't a reason to when D50 / A50 does basically was the D90 / A90 does at 1/5 the price.

I got my DX5 II at a shockingly low $260 after coupons on their official site. The original DX5 was almost twice the price years ago!
Not that I actually use the HPA function at all, but it's still nice to have something on hand that has HPA watts that can even drive speakers loud. :p

Clearly the company is run by engineers not marketing dunces. The naming doesnt matter. Only the performance.. only the measurements.
If they were good engineers, they would also ensure that they don't build such junk into the devices, which causes them to fail far too often, and above all, completely unnecessarily. For example:
- Unprofessional potting of components with potting compound.
- SMD components that are too small and too cheap, which are demonstrably much more sensitive, fail much more frequently, and cause a short circuit when defective.
- Far too little testing and troubleshooting before production and delivery. The latest example is the DX5 II.

In addition, there are various marketing disasters:
- Lack of transparency regarding problems, defects, firmware updates, etc.
- In many cases, completely unprofessional handling of defects, repair options, etc., especially after the warranty expires.

One point stands out for me in particular.
If, as a manufacturer, several devices of the same type fail at a customer's site, I would replace them immediately to begin troubleshooting as quickly as possible.
But as a customer, you're pretty much left out in the cold if you didn't buy from a retailer like Amazon, Audiophonics, etc.

Even an engineer should understand that these aren't good ideas. You don't need marketing dunces for that. In my circle of friends and acquaintances alone, I've counted well over 50 unsold units in the higher price range last year, such as the DX9 (D), A90D, A70 Pro, LA90(D), B200, B100, D900, A900, Centaurus, D90 III (D), etc.

Hello guys. Is this device suitable for a certain application? I will try to explain below:
Using FiiO K7 pre\line outs to connect this amp, and then using one of the outputs to plug in planar magnetic headphones such as Moondrop Para and potentially others in the future? (these are my first planars and i am considering something from Dan Clark, Audeze or Fostex in the future) The reason i hesitate to use FiiO K7 as DAC\AMP combo is simple: a) it actually shut down on me once when i was using Moondrop Para with 4.4 balanced out. b) once i assemble my home theater, i plan to connect headphone amp to Zone 2 line outs of my AVR and this will make FiiO K7 redundant anyway. The AVR in question is Pioneer VSA-LX805M2(B). And i will not use it's headphone jack because i dont want a wire across the room. The RCA will go hidden in skirting board around the room and behind my couch where the amp will rest.
Sorry i am dense when it comes to reading graphs. Am i losing anything worth mentioning by NOT using balanced inputs on the back of the amp? AVR only have XLR for zone 1 stereo pre-amp, so i cant use it separately from 7.1.4 setup and this leaves me with line outs\ins.
Looking at Topping A50 III since it's relatively inexpensive and can probably power whatever i plan to use anyway.
Thank you.

Yes, the A50III is for for that purpose.

Balanced input can eliminate mains hum and other common-mode noise that especially long RCA cable runs are susceptible to pick up.

Besides that, the Amp will perform identically.

Thank you. The RCA length i will need to run from AVR to listening position with amplifier are about 8 meters give or take.
Do you think this might cause an issue?

Impossible to say. Sometimes 20m runs are fine and other times a 2m run can already make trouble.

Depends entirely on the surrounding electronics, mains wiring, and grounding in the room.

While reading the excellent comments from @Roland68 on the components used by Topping engineers, a very small suggestion: the volume potentiometer of the A5 III is not really of very high quality. If it is redundant for you, remove it (it's not very difficult!) and you will not recognize your excellent A50 III, with transparency, clarity, and enhanced details!

I assume that comment was at least partially ironic. The DAC measures transparent as is. The best you can hope for when removing the potentiometer is an improved channel balance and no crackle anymore when changing the volume (because you can't change it anymore...). And of course there will be one less part to fail eventually. Removing it will not improve the sound in any other way.

Hi,

As usual, Topping measurements are stellar.
But am I the only one having some problems keeping up with the release of their products ?

And Topping is the perfect proof that I do not like perfection :)
I have owned several Topping headphones amp.
Bought them after reading these reviews from Amirm...
Never liked the sound.
Conclusion : I like "coloured" sound better than "neutral" sound.
So be it !
Points for admitting it!
