Tinnitus

I believe your Tinnitus is from your critical music listening. Below I explain why you got Tinnitus?

There are natural sounds and un-natural sounds. Un-natural sounds are electronic sounds. Electronic un-natural sounds are generated from speakers such as speakers in cell phone, am/fm radio, PAs (schools, parks, concert halls, etc.), hi-fi audio, cars, $million audio systems.

Human can't comprehend the natural and un-natural sound at same time. All a'philes hate noises (natural sounds, dog barking, water flowing, dish-washing, wife's talking, neighbor's hammering, etc.) while they are listening their audio system. It's because they can't hear the audio sound with any natural sound. Therefore, late night (quiet!) is the best time to listen. If there are natural and un-natural sound together, ears/brain can choose one sound only or alternate very fast between 2 different sounds (I guess 5 times/second). A'philes can do it alternate faster than others.

Why you got Tinnitus now? The audio from low resolution audio components usually have weak sound imaging (weak focus) and people hear it with less concentration. It's like a background music to them. However, with your recent audio upgrade, you listen more critical music listening. You concentrated hard to search sound images. Kef speakers are known for strong sound character and your ears/brain is trained to be a core a'phile. Your ears/brain are easily (automatically) search for focus between different sounds. It's like 100 times more work for your brain to process sounds and it results lots of strain to your ears/brain. With your trained ears/brain now is tired of un-natural sounds, but they are everywhere (car radio, PC, cell phone.) and you brain doesn't stop processing. Tinnitus is one of reasons of "the listener's fatigue." ex.) People get sleepy (after 30 min.) in Sunday worship in churches.

Listen to natural and un-natural sounds in below. All speakers in the world sound/behave like the left speaker. Test your speaker saying "hello" or any words.

I had severe tinnitus for many years. My tinnitus has disappeared after my system’s sound became natural about 2 years ago. Below is my system.
What is your background in tinnitus research?

What is the scientific basis for any of the opinions you have given in this post?

I developed tinnitus from being an artilleryman in the US army in the Vietnam war, forced to do so as a draftee. Blowing a 200 or so pound round out of an 8 inch barrel will do that to you.

I was about to write "I can imagine"

But I suspect I can't.

And I'll bet you were not supported very much after being forced to endure that damage.

There's not much that can be done to cure the tinnitus problem when it is caused by overly loud sounds. It it's an after effect of a medical condition, then it might be cured when the condition is taken care of. Maybe-I'm not a doctor and so I cannot write authoritatively on that.

There is a new treatment (2023), and, as far as I've read, it is the only treatment that provides lasting benefits as shown in real medical trials and is now approved in the US. https://www.lenire.com/ It is not offered at very many locations yet, and I have not tried it, but it seems promising.

About other things that help with Tinnitus:

1 Time. For some lucky people it just goes away for no apparent reason (though people almost always ascribe their cure to something they happened to be doing at the time, it's never repeatable in tests). When this happens the fortunate newly freed person posts a new tinnitus cure in a forum somewhere (Oatmeal with cardamom... whatever odd thing they last ate. Air travel. Taylor Swift.)

As far as I've read there are no other tested cures. There are MANY anecdotal cures. And some things seem to reduce the tinnitus for a little while.
That's probably because it is known there is no single cause, though the most common are persistent loud noise or VERY loud noise for even a relatively short exposure. Some drugs cause it (in fact, you REALLY should look at any medications you're taking. Some antibiotics, for example, can cause permanent tinnitus or worsen existing tinnitus. I made mine worse this way...).
But some people just suddenly get it one day without loud noises or drugs. Nobody really knows why. There are lots of theories.

Some things I've tried that are often listed as improving your affliction:
Magnesium, (no change)
Noise (white, pink, gray, etc) around the frequency of your tinnitus sounds. This works! For about 30 seconds the tinnitus is almost gone! Then it starts to come back. It's "Awakenings" except just 30 seconds.
Background murmur noises like flowing water (just masks your tinnitus and helps you forget it's there): For my tinnitus it would have to be way too loud to do any good. I hear mine on the freeway with the windows open loud and clear.

The most effective thing I've done is just let myself get distracted. If I'm working or reading, watching TV... I can forget about it for a while.
Even listening to music (on my Genelecs - just for a little ASR related content), if I'm involved in the music and not so much in evaluating the audio quality, I can forget about the ringing.

Preventive:
Just keep the volume down, except maybe briefly. Prolonged listening at the volume that seems most enjoyable for you is probably too loud, and you have a good chance of increasing the tinnitus.
Always wear ear protection for yard work and such with power tools. It might not seem that bad, but it can add up.
I haven't gone to concerts in years, but some people recommend musicians ear plugs. They're supposed to reduce the volume without distorting the frequency spectrum too much. If that's something you want to do. I think concerts can be more damaging than just about anything else most people experience. Except maybe loud headphone listening.

POST NOTE: Tinnitus very often comes with a frequency notch in your hearing where you're basically deaf. Mine was around 15khz, though it has dropped over time as I've aged. It seems to follow the highest pitch I can hear, so closer to 12Khz now. I am deaf over 12Khz. One nice thing. You can get a million speakers that are aces on the spin test below 12Khz! For Cheap! Everything seems to fall apart with the super directionality of higher frequencies. You can use a frequency generator (online there are several), if you're confident your equipment playback can handle it up to the limits of your hearing. Pro Tip: DO NOT keep turning up the volume as you get to higher frequencies you don't hear as well. You can fry your speakers and maybe your ears too. You won't know how loud the sound is.

Good Luck!!

Yes you can find out more here. It only slightly worked for a good friend but has helped many.

As someone suffering from Tinnitus I find some of these causes or treatments borderline insulting or snake oil… ‘natural sound’ - Really? On ASR?
Placebo’s can be very powerful too of course. Check out this paper.
But to get to my point:

I’m in the middle of a (science based) treatment for Tinnitus. The treatment, coming from an audio logic clinic with evidence based practice consist of 12x2 hour sessions, and 6 online sessions, with different exercises and treatments based on cognitive behavioral therapy. There’s one psychologist and one psychosomatic physiotherapist leading the sessions.
I’m there with 6 other people, and the cause of their problems varies wildly. It can be from physical defects, falling, illness, and of course loud music or machinery (or artillery rounds- not so common here) and more.
Basically, it is your brain doing the beeps, buzzing or whatever.
You train your brain and body to accept this sound as just being there. Their treatment has been proven to work with many people. That is, not to cure the Tinnitus, which so far has never worked anywhere on the planet, but to accept the sound just as you can ignore the sound of traffic if you live near a road.
It’s about removing the negative connotations that happen in your brain when the Tinnitus is there, which is what makes it worse or even unbearable.
I will try to write something about the result here when it starts to work… I hope.

I have Doctor degree in Psychoacoustics.

Just kidding. I am not a doctor. :D Does it matter? My post is easy to understand with examples. They are my opinions and I got them from my experience. I made those videos to support my belief in my previous post.

My tinnitus cured. I hope my post is helpful to members.

As I outlined in the other thread, their initial roll out in EU was a disaster. People who tried in EU found it to not be effective at all. It was said that their testing was NOT placebo controlled. On this basis, I almost didn't go through it. But eventually decided to give it a try. It was totally ineffective for me and if anything, the constant reminder that I had tinnitus made the symptoms somewhat worse. The cost is thousands of dollars for the device. But that is not the "real" cost. The real cost is daily sessions where you have to sit there and have your tongue excited with the probe while listening to the same short loop of "music." It did nothing for me so I don't recommend it to anyone else.

I believe you are a manufacturer, vendor or dealer. You need an appropriate flag on your account. You are also "pitching" a sound system as a "cure" for tinnitus which I don't think is correct

Exactly the same comments from my friend, although he said there was a slight improvement but that could have been coincidental or placebo.

How to flag please?

Yes. I make and sell speakers and mics. However, in this thread, I didn't sell my products. I only talk about Tinnitus related topics.

Yes, I accept that's what you were doing and probably in good faith. The reason for the flag is so that people are aware and can decide for themselves. As it reads, it feels a bit like you have made a discovery using "product x", but it's useful for readers to know that "product x" is your own product!

I think we should develop all medical procedures and therapies this way.

Imagine - I just drilled into my wife's head with my cordless drill, and she doesn't have migraines any more. (At least, she doesn't say anything about them. Or about anything else really)

I hope my post is helpful to other migraine sufferers. :p

You are right. Contacting mods right away.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. there may be no cure for tinnitus but I'll welcome any placebo based cure or whatever works i'll take it. Also to note I didn't get bothered by tinnitus all week and i started hearing those dreaded high frequency sounds the moment i started reading this thread to check new replies :)

Military. Airforce. 30 years. Search and rescue, helos.

Feet to inches away from screaming jet engines, screaming straight cut gear transmissions, squealing comms and when things went electronic, screaming cooling fans.

Tinnitus and hearing loss. Thats 24/7/365 in both ears. I’ll never again know complete silence.

It sounds like that ear ringing/whining noise after an explosion on a movie they put in. When that does happen in a movie, it drives me right out of the room in near pain.

There is no real cure as tinnitus is a form of hearing damage. Little hairs in the cochlea het broken off and they don’t grow back. Same with hearing damage being cumulative. At least thats how its been described to me by several audiologists and other hearing specialists I’ve been sent to over the years.

They've tried hearing aids with white noise, sound generators, etc. nothing works.

I can’t explain the “how” of it, but I eventually trained my brain to not hear it and “listen around” it. Or at least push it back into the background of my mind. I consider it a skill that needs to be developed and maintained.

I use my concentration to push it to the back of my awareness. It’s always there, but it’s pushed away. I just don’t allow it to take center focus in my consciousness.

The constant concentration that requires can be fatiguing though. But I have no other choice except to lat it take over, so I’ve just got to endure.

Ironically, a white noise sound of air rushing past an airliner’s skin is also helpful for me. It mist just be at some sympathetic freq that helps me push back the ringing scream. Dunno why it helps, just that it does.

It also helps if theres at least some noise around as I can focus on that instead of the tinnitus, which helps me push it to the back of my consciousness. Total silence is a problem for me because then there nothing to concentrate on hearing except the screaming ringing noise.

Of course, now that I’m thinking about it, it’s forcing its way back into center focus….time to stop paying attention to it again.

Same, but on an aircraft carrier flight deck. Tonkin Gulf, Mediterranean and Arctic Circle cruises. Still dealing with this, but I am able to tune it out (ignore it) at least until I think about it again.
