Thinking about retirement?

There is no limited progress of medicine:
- in case of cardiac infarciation the standard procedure is to reopen the stenosis, so there is no (or less) loss in myocard
- in case of cerebral infarciation there a lytical and thrombectomical procedures, but limited to age
- over 90% of apoplexia are cardiogen and that should be addressed by anticoagulants ... but that is another place to talk about ...
Okay sorry, but after working 35 years in medical devices and receiving 111 patents and counting for devices for the cardiovascular system, heart, and brain I must correct something here. A stenosis followed by an occlusion of an artery in the heart or brain can permanently damage tissue that will never return leading to many comorbidities well into the future. In fact for brain, it is difficult to develop new tech as many strokes go undetected as a tiny stroke in critical area can create more damage than a larger one in a repetitively unused part of the brain. This inturn makes the number patients needed in clinical study to be in the tens of thousands to show efficacy of any treatment. That said, there have huge advances in diagnostic tech, drugs, interventional devices and implants since the late 1970s leading to vastly better outcomes and fewer complicated and risky surgeries.

I'd be cool if/when -say- an appleWatch provides detection for such tiny-[minor] strokes.

Are you involved in such futuristic detection methods?
It is not OT.

"A movement taking shape’: Many US retirees are looking to move abroad. Here are the best countries for them"

Oops: "Meanwhile, more than 17 million Americans aged 65 or older — approximately one in three — are considered economically insecure (meaning they have income levels at 200% or more below the federal poverty level)."
What does that mean? They have to pay?

I reckon it’s the 200M of the rest of us between ages 18-65 that have to pay… united we stand?

Panama and Mexico I get but France and Spain I don't think would work out for many Americans. Just too different in almost every aspect.

At least in the UK we have some ersatz American culture - but it's not even on the list.
My late M-I-L lived in Guad for 28 years. Was very close to a family there and we still are. I went to many parts of the country and even went birding with a cousin of theirs way out in the sticks. I would not consider even visiting Mexico anymore.

The stories of Americans moving to France and Spain without learning the language are myriad, and they wonder why it's "hard".

Have some freaking respect for where you're moving.

We're visiting France in just over a week and we've been taking private French lessons since last October. Not doing great, but we're making progress. Going to do our best to be "good" visitors.

Just came back from London and Paris.

You think you are being a respectful visitor because he are learning the local language? You think the French is appreciative of it?

There are stereotypes on French people, those stereotype didn't magically come about.

The next time Europeans decide to call Americans arrogant, rude or whatever, I'm just going to roll my eyes.

The French are very different from each other.
When I went to the United States twice and for a long time in the East (Vermont, Maine, and New York), I found the American citizens helpful, friendly, and very patriotic. Perhaps I was lucky enough to meet good Americans :)

If you're willing to seek it out, USA is still a land of opportunity, and it's sufficiently diverse that, if you don't care for one flavor of it, there are countless others to choose from, with climates ranging from tundra to tropical. And more so than some other cultures, you are relatively free to be what you want to be.

I wonder how many of USA's lower income households are there because they've been sold a lifestyle paid for in monthly installments. Maybe I got lucky by never getting around to it: I call it my Meta Benz.

Were I to relocate overseas, my priority might be adventure, plus tasty food.

A recent radio advertisement starts with "most people spend more time planning for their vacation rather than their retirement"!
*What does that mean? **They have to pay?
*It means they were ill prepared.
**Should those who planned pay?

There is a misunderstanding - I wondered about the math. How can something be 200% below a reference? If it is 100% below the reference it is zero. It cannot be lower (or becomes negative)

My bad!
I figured that the missing 100% was like receiving 100% subsistence from various national programs. ;)

I lost my job of 21 years in post production last December. I was hoping for another 5 years or so just to build up a bit more of a cushion, but it wasn’t to be.

I initially considered doing some freelance work, but the further away I got from it, the more I realized I wanted nothing to do with it anymore. The house is paid off, the cars are paid off, no debt and plenty of savings.

SO happy to be away from the grind. I now spend time with my hobbies, my community, my wife, my pets. Love it!

57 years old and happier than ever.

You won!!!

Similar thing happened to my Father-in-Law. He just turned 90 and has never regretted getting cut lose from his job around the same age as you were.

Been early retired for about 8 years now. Then Covid. Then Ukraine. Then Hamas. To everyone still on the fence: the Gog & Magog war is going to hit its 42 month anniversary next month or so. Oh yeah, it's also the 70th Jubilee cycle, 3430 years. If you didn't know, now you know.
