The Waxwing Thread

"it could help with needle drops"

I hate that term. Dropping the needle is not a good idea. Need some other description.
With my 1200, I place the needle on the record before starting the motor.

The device as such would also require CE certification.
There are probably exceptions, but I can't say whether this is the case here.
In many cases, the CE marking of systems can be dispensed with if the individual components have CE approval.

Thanks. Certification of power supply would not be sufficient at all. The device as such would also require CE certification.
The power supply requires CE because it plugs into an AC outlet above 50 volts. The device itself - not including Blutooth - does not require it because it operates below 75 volts DC (5 volt device). The Blutooth has CE, so that is covered.

Would you mind sharing a reference? There is a low voltage guidance which I saw - but not sure if thats what you are referring to. Thx

That just covers the low voltage directive. It will also need to comply with the EMC directive.

Is it possible the "benign" clause will apply because the Blutooth is satisfied? From a practical sense it is highly unlikely the Waxwing has any Electro-Magnetic Compatibility issues. If that were a problem, then the input circuitry would surely be affected. However, one does have to "jump through the hoops" of whatever regulations to sell products existing in the affected areas. Link to Clearaudio "Statement Phono Preamp"

Page 4 references a simple statement indicating conformance to CE. Could be self-certification, but they are covering that requirement.

I wonder how much the price would increase to get an "overall" certification"?

No, CE marking for EMC directive will be mandatory.

Question:
I found the following article:

My Waxwing is working OK with a Technics SL-100C.
I also have a Technics SL-J2 with a muting relay and want to know that it will not cause "a loud pop" when the cartridge sets down.

The answer by Parks Audio:
Will work fine. I've even tested a mockup of the Technics muting circuit in the lab with the Waxwing. Hook it up and have fun.

Can I have two setups coming out of the waxwing, one to supply an Apollo audio interface via the optical cable and another to supply good headphones. They are focal stellia.
And if yes what would be the best way? My front end is a Linn LP12, Naim Aro and Goldring 1042. A also have a IFI micro IDSD headphone amp I could use.

You can use a different output on the waxwing for each system, or split or switch one output into both systems. I assume you want to use the digital outputs for both, but you could also just use the analog outputs into the headphone amp.
It looks like different models of micro iDSD have different digital inputs - some coax spdif and some micro toslink. If yours has coax then it's easy - toslink to the Apollo, coax to the iDSD. If it has toslink you need a switch or splitter, or a coax to toslink converter. See this review for a couple of examples.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've just found out that the IFI is not working, its either PCB or a Battery fault and needs to go back in for them to look at it.

Do you think a Dragonfly cobalt DAC would work straight out of the Waxwing to my headphones?

The sound I get through the speakers is excellent considering it's played through an Apollo Audio interface, just need to sort out the headphones. Whatever they use for the headphone output is not great.
Ive brought two items directly from manufacturers in my new set up. The waxwing and an amplifier from Nord. Both amazing products for the Money.
I will seek out companies that sell directly in future.

No. The Dragonfly only has a USB input which has to be connected to a USB host like a computer or some streamers.

Pick one of the many good headphone amps with analog inputs and use the analog outputs of the Waxwing which should still outperform the vinyl in terms of noise and distortion. If you want a better DAC then there are some tested here that have a good headphone output too, such as the DL100. Some have reported clicks and pops with SMSL DACs on change of sample rate, but I don't think this will be a problem with the Waxwing as I think it's constantly outputting at the same sample rate.

Than you for taking the time to reply. Although I have good equipment I have always had it installed so I'm not very knowledgeable, as I'm sure you can tell. I am trying to learn now. I am going to get the ifi mini idsd black repaired and try out both the analogue and digital inputs on the unit see which DAC sounds best. Think it's rather Bazar that ifi use a 3.5mm input on the front of the unit for the analogue.

The video also shows well why the app control was added/used (evolution from Puffin)
Personally, I found changing settings on-the-fly at the listening position to be very advantageous.

Standard youtube video reply incoming....

Please can people posting youtube videos include a summary of what it is saying. They are a very inefficient way of transferring information, and people shouldn't have to watch the damn thing to find out if it has any interest to them at all.

It would also be useful to know why the poster is posting it. What point (if any) are they trying to make. Do they agree with the content, or not? If about a device, are there any measurements, or is it a purely subjective evaluation Etc
