The Waxwing Thread

I had selected line and phono on a trial basis with my test file. This is really magic, as you can hear a clear improvement with vinyl records ;)

From the Waxwing manual:
"This function gently lessens many of the small pops and clicks normally heard during vinyl playback"
Maybe it does not work when the equalizing input chosen is "Line in"
It's the same input. Just applies an eq curve (eg riaa) or not. Magic is still applied - it will work if you use an external phono stage and feed that in with 0dB gain and no eq.

Attached the self-generated test file.
Thanks very much for doing this. So these are artificially generated? What if you try lowering the volume of the track relative to the clicks? The algorithm may be confused if the added sounds are using the same compression as the rest of the signal.

I'm not going to explore the system limits any further at the moment, as Magic improvements are still possible and will probably come, see also here: Link
I will continue to enjoy the Waxwing and if there is another real observation I will of course record it again and try to analyze it. That seems to me to be more effective than trying to generate test files artificially.
Of course, I will test my real recorded observations again with a firmware change ;)

I downloaded the NAK T-100 software and used my Waxwing Phono DSP to measure my Technics SL-QX300:

Speed Deviation & Wow and Flutter

In the Line-In position of the Waxwing, tape decks, ... can also be measured.

I have a Chord TT2 I wish to use as a pre into my power amp. The TT2 is digital only. Am I right that the Waxwing enables me to use my Rega P8 in this way?

Presumably that needs a test record with references sine waves on?

P8>analogue>Waxwing>Toslink>TT2>analoge>Power amp?

yes. I'm using toslink to my MiniDSP Flex and then to my AVR in exactly this way.

There is a an optical out port on the Waxwing. In the app, you have output options of analog (rca), 24/48 or 24/96.

Here is an interesting video that shows the possibilities of the Waxwing:

Detailed information regarding setup, settings, ... can be found on YT.

Hello! I am new here and considering to buy a Waxwing phono. Does anyone have experience with different cartridges playing with Waxwing? With all this processing, is there a difference in sound between cartridges similar like playing with analog phono stage..?
Thanks

Welcome!

Short answer is yes, it will not get in the way of hearing whatever your cartridge is generating, and will let you hear whatever differences you would have heard with a good analog phono stage.

The processing being done digitally won't make things sound alike, but it does give you a lot of flexibility that would be hard/impossible to find in an analog device. The 'magic' function works very well for example.

I have the Puffin and have very much enjoyed using it.

No.
I had already asked Shannon about the missing CE labeling:

...
The Waxwing works great and safely in Germany.
- While the power supply lacks the CE mark (possibly due to being sold in North America), it is actually certified for the CE:
https://www.mouser.com/catalog/additional/TT_Electronics_DoC_EU_ITE_T6637ST_R0.pdf
You can use a simple US-to-Europlug adapter with the provided power supply or you can also swap out the 5V USB supply for one of your own.

- The Bluetooth is also certified for the CE (see page 24):

https://www.renesas.com/us/en/document/dst/da14531-module-datasheet
...

Thanks. Certification of power supply would not be sufficient at all. The device as such would also require CE certification.
