The Waxwing Thread

main preamp - short cable - waxwing - long cable - turntable
or I can move the waxwing next to the turntable for
main preamp - long cable -waxwing - short cable -turntable.
The second option (waxwing directly next to turntable) is to be preferred. Connect the waxwing with your main pre-amp using a long cable - preferably optical Toslink (to avoid any ground loops).

This - it is exactly what I do with a 10m toslink 'cable". And for the first time in my life I have a turntable set up with almost zero electrical noise, even with the volume cranked to max. (I do also have a ground wire from the waxwing to electrical ground to achieve this, but it is possible that is only needed due to the dumbass Rega turntable grounding arrangement.)

Thanks, Will do, make total sense, should have just traded a optical port on my main system preamp, it's hooked to a old DVD player that's used once a year, LP's played almost every day. I have a 4K and Blu Ray disk player hooked up so I have full DVD capabilities even if I do just swap the toslink once a year for the DVD (it's a universal player for worldwide DVD's so once in a while it comes in handy)

Thanks for all your help.

There are many cheap optical switches available. Some even with remote control. Another box, however, then you do not need to change Toslink plugs any more.
Another option would be a optical/Toslink to coax adapter.

Have fun!

Android only at this point.
No, both android and IOS. As stated in the article on IOS you must install test flight to run the beta version of the app, but I believe it is still possible to install the waxwing firmware with the current version - though I've not tried it.

Oops, I didn’t click on “see more” to see the rest of the story. Support with the Waxwing is phenomenal. When I purchased serial #16 - original run of 20 - I understood it was the “Beta test run”. Any bugs I found were addressed within “days”. One of the best values in audio!

Thanks to all, hooked it up right with a toslink, no real difference but I should be future proof of any in air interference. Instead of lowering gain which was reduced to avoid the clipping sign from the recommended (for my cart) 37 to 32 I put the gain back to 37 but lowered the master volume by 1.5 and took gain back to 37. Spent hours listening to well know albums and I must say this sounds more analog well ........ than analog. Amazing.

Check your ADC levels are not clipping (Peak In remaining below 0dB)

Got to try a mono record today. You sure don't need a mono cartridge for true mono from a stereo cart. Just go from stereo in the app to either the right channel or left channel. Seems that sounds the best over just the mono button, much clearer picking right or left for obvious reasons. Very impressed.

Put one upstairs for my other table, got it running.

QUESTION (You great folks) since I have two Waxwings, and blutooth carries from upstairs to downstairs, any Bluetooth connections let me chose between either unit.

The slight issue that I find it the two under blutooth are Waxwing xxxx and Warwing xxxx, (the xxxx being a number, different on each unit).

I can live with this, BUT, can I apply customs names, it would be a quick hint I am controlling the right unit. Something like "Waxwing HT" and Waxwing Living room" or if space is a issue "Waxwing Up" and "Waxwing Down" (one is downstairs in my dedicated room and one is upstairs)

I sure don't see where I can change the default names of the units.

Can this be done?

Thanks in advance, you folks have been great, next stop, figuring out how to save/load user presets with labels such a stereo and mono.

Have a great day and happy holidays to all.

I dont know - I only have one. But if you contact Shannon - he will normally reply within one working day.

This is a very good question. I was going to write to Shannon because I just bought it and I was worried about which version it would be, etc., but Shannon was quick to respond.
Thanks, He is quick, will do.

To keep info here current, you can not change the names of a multi Waxwing setup at this time, no big deal, lowest number Waxwing is in the dedicated HT, highest number Waxwing is in the Living room, would have been nice but hardly matters. Could be a big deal if one had a bunch of them but that has to be very rare, even in a showroom.

Keep on waxing my friends.

After numerous phone calls to Amazon and the USPS, the Waxwing order was cancelled, 3 “guaranteed delivery dates came and went with no unit. Amazon said they transferred it to the USPS for delivery at 5:45 am Tuesday in Syracuse NY and out for delivery, a day late from the Monday date, but no delivery, promised last night, it would be here by 10 am this morning, no delivery. Amazon say it was transferred to USPS, the USPS’s track number says the package is in Euclid, Ohio, a tag made, but not picked up yet. At this point I gave up.

So after a record winter storm, delivery by Amazon / USPS has issues; which occasionally happens even in the absence of such storms. I'm not really sure why this is related to the Waxwing.
