The VHS Revival, It's True And Happening

I bought a six head Philips VCR just before DVD came out...and I still have it - practically unused with the box and packing.

And unlike tidy, organised people I've kept all my VHS tapes, including Simpsons episodes recorded back in the early 90s when they still broadcast them without all the cuts.

People forget the advantages - like being able to fast forward through the FBI warning and the 'We're going to stop making movies altogether if you keep copying them' crap.

Exciting times!

Reminds me of work, circa 1988. "Gilligan's Island" on 1" tape looked stunning.
Yup, worked for a post house that had 2 of those still in operation. The owner did a lot of work for the BeeGee's back in the day. 1995 - 2000 or so.
Beta SP, DigiBeta, D-2, Ampex DCT (great machines, still in use as tape for data backup) ...

I for one look forward to going back to wandering around the isles and finding nothing to watch instead of scrolling on a screen and finding nothing worth watching.

Based on trips I've taken in the past decade to Sham Shui Po, the Adelphi Mall, and the Yongsan Electronics Market, I think there is a market for vintage laserdisc players and media and CRT projectors made by the likes of Vidikron and Runco.

Our purchased new Zenith branded (OEM JVC, I think) VHS HiFi "Audio-Video Recorder". Purpose-built to be used for both, with variable recording levels (and peak reading fluorescent rec level meters) and a mode switch that shut off all video signals so that only the audio track(s) was/were recorded -- both linear and HiFi, interestingly enough. :)

We have dozens and dozens of hours of wintertime Holiday Music ;) dubbed to VHS HiFi, mostly on T-120 tapes recorded at the slow speed (6 hours per T-120). These are all more than 20 years old* -- some more than 30 :) -- and still sound very, very good.

The Zenith still works, too. :) It had some service when it was still under warranty, but has served well since the mid-late 1980s (ca. '86, give or take) when I bought it at one of the big annual Stereo Discounters HiFi Expo sales at the Timonium fairgrounds north of Baltimore, MD.

Note that this player, to afford a very compact footprint :p, had a side-loading tape configuration.
We had it playing music for a summer barbecue once for folks I worked with, and a woman who worked for me saw it and thought it was an 8-track player.

* EDIT: Oops I just noticed the photo above was taken in Dec 2009! The holiday tape that I was dubbing at the time is thus now only 15 years old (not 20). :) It is one of the very last I did, though (AFAIK).

Zenith, The Quality Goes In, Before The Name Goes On ! :p

LoL... I was selling VCRs about the time these where being sold and Zenith was the competition's product. I had JVC, Sony, Magnavox etc and we knew the Zenith was a solid VCR and feared our customers going over and buying a Zenith. The Zenith had an all steel chassis not plastic and was built to last.

Mitsubishi Black Diamond is the one to have (if it was still 1988)

OMG! I should be saving this advice for myself, but, being kind hearted I'm going to pass it on. You can buy Blockbuster shares for 1 penny! If we jump on this and millions of people begin moving back to VHS, we'll be able to afford real audiophile equipment! Sure, it may not perform as well as inexpensive Topping and SMSL equipment, but damn, it can look great (if you have questionable taste)! /s

The first video ever hooked up to a stereo system, for tge home.
Looked and sounded excellent.
VHS HiFi was the first consumer digital medium.

So there's that.
You wouldn't have any of your high performance audio without passing through this era.
