The rise of Britain’s listening bars…

like when to use the word "timbre"... ;)

I like the idea, not sure I'd ever use one as I have alcohol & a fancy hifi at home, plus critically my choice of music. I'd be interested in just how good the sound is, I've been to a few events where larger hifi speakers were used in a large space, and was really surprised how well the sound worked.

I'd love to open one of these bars, thought about it more than once. But long term I suspect it's a good way to lose a lot of money if your location does not have a lot of rich younger (under 35) people.

London, New York, Tokyo maybe but not going to work out here in the sticks.

Doesn't that depend on the kind music and type/price of the beverages. ;)

So more about fashion than hifi. Figures.

Both I think. Japanese Jazz Kissa's are hugely proud of their systems, but they tended to go for Western brands that were a bit more obscure/had more cache in Japan; JBL, Tannoy, Klipsch, Mcintosh etc.

Western listening bars are absolutely inspired by that and buy similar setups, but they do care about the sound. Eating a Vegan Japanese tasting menu whilst having some great music played at a conversational level via a Kilpschorn in each corner of the room is one of my favourite experiences.

Yeah, same!

How much do they need to charge for cover/drinks? Doesn't sound too lucrative....

Yes, being 2 hours up the Hudson from NYC might not be the spot for an "audiophile" bar so I guess I won't "give it a shot"...

Someday I'd like to win enough money to do something like that and have no concern at all for ever making a profit.

Most towns have bars and most bars have speakers in them. Nobody would complain if you installed nice speakers in a given bar. For the small towns, so far, so good.

However, to get enough people who are willing to sit quietly and pay attention to music and care about speakers into the same bar at the same time, you probably need to locate in a city so you can get that 0.01% of the population to come out and overpay for drinks. ;)

I went to spiritland in 2019?. It’s a nice bar and it has a recording studio/booth in it too. The sound was pretty mediocre, but the speakers looked like they belonged in a place like that. It’s a shame that people might be lead to think that it is “hifi”. I’ve heard much better in pro audio shops and some hifi dealers. I felt it was a trendy type, hipster joint with slightly more emphasis on music curation than normal bars. I hope more spring up in my part of the world. Smaller the better I say.
