Pub, short for public house if I'm right, is slowly replacing the term, the bar, here in America. I first noticed it about 25 years ago.

It did used to be that way ( by design! ) , mostly , depending on the demands of any particular OP and or discussion. The more valuable and technically literate ones getting preserved like ' reference threads ' with ones that hold less value or had just ran their course given the slack so folks could have a different more free and expressive dare I say fun experience.

No fun here now , unless your in the 'pub ' , with no beer and no bar maids , let alone the freedom to do a line off some cleavage in the bogs .

Ah well , society is becoming unbearably puritanical.

The bar is in the pub... so where you order and get your drinks (counter) we call the bar, not the whole place. A club has a bar, but not a pub. Little differences... 'aint life grand.

A club is different from a pub because a club is members only - so this thread is more of a club than a pub, in that you have to join ASR in order to enter.

A pub can have different 'bars' in it though - a public bar where the drinkers tend to stand more and a lounge bar with comfy seating and tables. Maybe the two are being combined more these days (I've not drunk (got drunk) in a bar for some years now - cough...)
