About 30 years ago I DIY'd a 12-inch sub with a Kiega plate amp. The amp was sold by Madisound, as was the woofer. The amp is a Kiega 5150. The driver is a Swan 305 that was built for Madisound by Eclipse.
The sub has been sitting in a closet in my basement for 20 years. My son dragged it out a year or more ago as he is a bass hog. The foam surround is rotting away. Also, not long after purchase the amp had what was essentially a recall as the fuse was not wired correctly, so it basically operated without a fuse in place. I never bothered to send it back to Madisound for a corrected version.
Motivated by the recent reviews and my son's activity, today I pulled the driver off the sub box, held in place by 8 hex-head botls. The surround was 70% gone. I did find a vendor on line that sells a new surround kit for that specific driver for $26. I ordered one. What the heck!
I also pulled the plate amp off the box. It is made pretty damn well. Weighs a ton. The IEC socket fuse area inside the amp was covered in shrinkwrap for airtightness. I cut that back and, lo and behold, the assembly person wired the IEC connector with fuse improperly, thus bypassing the fuse. Tomorrow I will break out the soldering iron and in five minutes that will be corrected.
I looked at the box I made of MDF and it is built like a tank. I forgot how fastidious I was in building it. Double thick walls. Bracing. Foam on the inner walls. Maple wood veneer.
30 years ago the the 12-inch driver could shake the house. Who knows what the distortion on that amp is?
I should have it back up and running in a week or so.
If I cannot do a good job in reviving the woofer, I may just buy a WiiM or ESL sub. I have a WiiM Ultra, so the WiiM sub would be a good mate.
