The Odyssey (Review)

Yeah and for decades nobody ever complained about all the genetic Northern Europeans in biblical movies with very few Semitic actors in key roles. I think in this case much of it is pure racism by critics and wanting big name stars by producers.
I complained, and other people did complain as well. White washing has been a thing for a long time and it has never been okay.
Though I'm positive that the people calling other people racist for wanting greek(looking) actors in a movie set in Greece would cry their eyes out if a white person would play Kunta Kinte. And of course they'd be right to do so, but I'm just asking for consistancy and some logical sense to not be selctive when it comes to represent culture and people in movies.
To me movies should be immersive, and seeing a star buck coffee cup in a fantasy about dragons, a black woman as a viking king or Charlize Theron dressed in a fishnet in greek mythology really do take me out of the movie.

I don't want to make you feel bad but Africa is very close to Troy look at a map. The mythical nature of the story with Gods and all, and fact is that the Greeks were a seafaring culture who frequented all of the eastern Mediterranean make it plausible. Now if Helen was a Korean actress we would be on the same page. Sure Noland could have spend an another $25 mill and found some English speaking Mediterranean types but did not. Helen was not only one not wearing a Greek face. IMO the racists were those who brought up DEI and not anyone but Helen of Troy.

Sure it's close to africa, but it's still a strech imo.

This clip did really point out my feeling about the movie (and movies in general). He names Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World as a great example, and that movie really goes ALL in with it's immersion seeing how authentic everything in it is despite the plot being fiction.

I was just reading this book from Jonathan Haidt about morality.

His book tries to explain that moral intuition drive our politics—and dismissing opposing views as mere “ignorance”, "masculinity issues" or “stupidity” is a lazy way to avoid engaging with real moral differences.

Dismissing alternative perspectives as "pathetic" doesn't make you enlightened; it just signals that you're comfortable inside a partisan echo chamber.

Maybe you should try to understand why people value things differently, rather than hiding behind psychoanalysis to protect your own worldview.

At no point have I made such statements to infer ignorance, masculinity issues, stupidity, or pathetic, and as for moral differences? - let’s just say you are very welcome to the U.S…..given the current climate I imagine a majority of countries around the world would agree with me

You crack on with your reading of haidt, personally i find his viewpoint on social divisiveness rather simplistic and overtly biased towards the U.S.

Now if Helen was a Korean actress
She comes out of an egg and her grandfather was a Titan. Really she could look like any ethnicity in the world or beyond and it's not going to be a-historical.

The only requirement for the story to work is that she has to be a bit of a babe.

Honestly I think Helen is an impossible casting and I’dd have rather done it like the briefcase in pulp fiction; you never see her in frame but people’s reactions tell you everything you need to know
Keeping with what Nolan often does, tell don't show. Like the sirens that we didn't see (except for a very small glimps from far away) and didn't hear. We only heard some muffle and saw that Odysseus suffered from something. It was a very rushed scene mostly there to check it off the list. Same with that vortex and the monster afterwards, it was just some obstacle that quickly went away with not much thrill.

Awww I loved the Siren scene and thought their song being about about giving in to despair was a really nice interpretation (at least that's how I read the scene); if I was stuck in the wilderness for over a decade that'd be a much bigger temptation for me than a hot mermaid

And the fact that they were never clearly shown adds to that IMO, you can just about see them in the distance, luring you in

Scylla and Charybdis.

Decidedly average film imo. Saw it in Imax. Hoped it would at least be visually impressive given the expense.
Nope. Visually kind of dull. Audio was too. Looked and sounded lofi.
Plus, as folk have mentioned, just waay to loud. (I question how cinemas are allowed to do this as I am sure it will damage hearing.)
Only positive being I got a discounted ticket being 60 now. Second Avatar, plus Alien: Prometheus, both in 3D Imax waay more enjoyable.
My 2c.

Scylla and Charybdis.
I'm still partial to the Hades II videogame interpretation of these characters. Scylla as the singer in a punk rock band:
