the most beautiful and famous pop songs of the 40 years

Pepper by Butthole Surfers

It was a hit in 1996 and I think it's legit beautiful. From that album Electriclarryland I like Cough Syrup even more: beautiful jangle pop with an awesome strings outro but it wasn't popular.

This video is a little shorter than the album version but the video is really funny.

Don't know if it's beautiful but its pop, the piano line says so.

Read My Mind The Killers (Pet Shop Boys Stars Are Blazing Mix)

Glad to see Voices Carry made the team! Fabulous song and a great arrangement (if a bit "of its time").

Not sure if this is famous enough for all y'all, but Sinead Lohan's No Mermaid is a contender, I would opine.

Howzabout Patty Griffin's One Big Love? It certainly got "adult contemporary" airplay in the Boston area.

I also very much like Emmylou Harris' cover of One Big Love from her fabulous but very bleak album Red Dirt Girl.

Not much on Madonna, but I really do like Crazy for You. The internet says 1985, so in scope. ;)

Similarly, I think that Cindy Lauper's Time After Time is exceptional. Aww, shoot. 1983, sez the internet. :(

Barbra Streisand - Somewhere (Official Video) - 1985 (The Broadway Album)

Ms. Streisand wasn't a beauty queen (as her own mother once was quoted as saying), but it's her voice that's always been her calling card...with almost as much power at Whitney Houston's voice (IMO). But her style seems even more effective than Ms. Houston's (IMO).

The intro and coda on this "official video" are a little cheesy, but her vocals certainly aren't.

The original song is from The King and I (1951, the Rogers and Hammerstein musical) of course, but it nevertheless charted in 1985 with this David Foster arrangement.

Bobby was a racist... Ouch

Simply Red - Holding Back The Years (Official 4K Remaster) - 1985

A bit offbeat, but this song has always struck me as iconic for that period of time.

In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel (1986)

I was mesmerized by the sound of this entire album...and this song in particular. It seemed to come from a totally new source that I hadn't heard before, but also still familiar to my ears.

I think it brought me tears. Johnny Cash, Hurt. Might have been the video that tipped me over the edge though.
