Bought a new mobile.
It comes with a USB-C connector.
All my cables are USB A > Mini.
Looking for an adaptor I came across this product.

A fully analog USB-C to 3.5 headphone jack adaptor.
USB-C in Alternate Mode produces analog out on some pins.
Obvious, USB-C is the most analog sounding digital bus!

The Google Pixel 2 that I just bought includes an identical-looking adapter. I guess the DAC is in the phone. I'll test it this evening.
Acording to this page (I'm not sure I believe it) https://mobilesyrup.com/2017/10/06/pixel-2-xl-dac-missing there is no DAC in the Pixel 2s.
The iPhone adapter that looks the same as above has the dac in the lightning plug, https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+Lightning+to+Headphone+Jack+Adapter+Teardown/67562

Before today I thought the DAC + amp was in the phone, and these adapters were just pin out converters, sounds like some android phones work like that, but not all.

As the Pixel 2 does have speakers, I do expect a DAC some where
