The modern Preamp quandary...

Parasound P6, Phono in, digital in, sub out, HT bypass, remote volume control. HP crossover for mainsand LP for subs.View attachment 424076
Well there it is, I didn't realize the Parasound had those digital inputs. A might expensive, but should do what the OP wanted.

The “Saga”, “Kara” and the “Freya” all come with remotes I believe. Unless I misread the Manuals. ;)
Yes those have remotes. I was thinking of the $49 one you mentioned. Does not have Toslink in however. The Parasound above seems to have it all.

Wow that really looks nice. Why does black cost $500 more than silver?
I'm not a sales guy. I would search and contact various dealers, maybe even find an open box deal. I would include looking at buying direct form Parasound, they may have a deal.
I own the P6 preamp paired with the Parasound A23+. I like having one place for volume control for all my inputs.

Just a sub out or bass management also? Wiim has a nice feature set, what isn't "for you"? Use an external phono stage if you insist on using vinyl perhaps, gives more flexibility on the gear after that.
So - I popped into my local dealer today to pick up a Wiim ultra to see what all the fuss was about...

I must confess I thought it was going to be just a commercial sonos-esque multi-box that mastered little. I was wrong. That being said, there are flaws but easily navigated past.

For £350 I am pretty impressed and, hands up, I just didn't initially get it.

The phono in is pretty terrible but I've hooked up the Fosi x5 phono to the line in which sounds great.

The headphone out is also bad in fact worse however I hooked up a Topping d10s I had with fixed vol connected to the JDS Atom (that I was using as a preamp) and plugged in my hd600's - also sounds really very good.

After those two side solutions, which I am more than happy with, the rest of the unit is really quite excellent... OK I can't plug in my HAF convolution filters for the TT but the 10 band PEQ is more than adequate. Plus I can do that in Roon for streaming along with headphone filters.

Plus, I get my needed mono sub/bass crossover but the real icing for me was being able to plug the umik-1 mic into my phone to take the measurements...

I won't be returning it!

Glad you gave it a chance. What was terrible about the phono stage?

I completely agree that any pretense to an innovative preamp or Dac should combine at least, as very basic fatues:

- good measurements as a preamp
- a configurable stereo sub output
- room optimization ability
- a stellar integrated headphone amp

Optionally (because I think those integrated capabilities will inevitably stop working)

- streaming service integration

Otherwise, yawn, don't wake me up with a 0.2dB SINAD improvement doing the exact same.

Why would a stereo sub pre-out be a good thing? If you mean separately adjustable for content, perhaps, but how about level/delay?

A sub out is obvious, and I stated room optimization capabilities which cover whatever else you meant.

A sub out that has no bass management is of limited use. Stereo subs are very limited use. Just saying....but didn't see a reference to room optimization for subs otoh.

You may want to re-read my message, which said "a configurable stereo sub output" as well as "room optimization ability". Thanks.

Yeah I amended my answer somewhat, altho configurable stereo sub output is vague as well as room optimization ability. Thanks.

Reboot this discussion. Start with the WIIm Ultra and discuss what should be added or removed.
I would like a WiiM Ultra without the streaming capabilities as it will be on my desktop and connected to my PC as the primary source (with an added USB input). Would prefer a stronger materials build, especially around the ports in the back. Any options?

Just found the MM/MC toggle switch in the app...

Sounds pretty darn good - what with the eq engaged and sub out I'll probably just use this going forward. Plus, got all my presets programmed in so its a breeze switching modes.

Now down to just the one box!

To conclude,

I've ridded the USB out to the topping d10s -> JDS atom -> hd600s. I hear no difference...

For me the headphone output is perfectly fine, does all I need. From the measurements I've seen here, perhaps 300 ohms was targeted.

I have, though, noticed some interference on phono in... if not grounded properly via headphones...

.. bit of AM radio Luxembourg to add to the list! (though not through Airplay ;))
