The Man-cave is under construction besides the gear i gathering first things piece by piece like a reinforced glass desk, couch listening chair an additional damping pannels self made. Setup is as well close monitoring with IMF Compact II Monitors As Full Range Vandersteen Model 1 speakers. Both fed/powered by NAD C370, Topping D10 an a Allen & Heath Xone 4D digital desk for home recording. Probably in 1 month time i will not recognise it as it now is. For now a bit of a mess but despite that it sounds already great.

Here is my ‘old school’ mid to hifi set up which has held well up for decades. I used to work for a midfi electronics retailer back in the day so we could buy equipment at cost. I am still a novice with this but know some general concepts. I had an outrageous Kenwood/Visonic car stereo too w 2 amps and 6 speakers lol. Those were the days.

Speakers
My speakers are the cult classic Energy 22 References from 1985. These speakers have a rich history here in Canada after they won a blind listening test to be the studio monitor of the CBC ( Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) beating out some of the best studio monitors in the world at the time. And at $800/pr they were affordable to both audiophiles and more regular listeners.

They were designed in part by Winslow Burhoe (EPI) with a dual inverted hyperdome tweeter and mirror imaged to each other. The result was one of the most accurate bookshelf speakers both on and 30 deg off axis. 28 hz to 45 khz +/- 3db, +/- 2db 30 deg off axis. Bass is unbelievable too for a bookshelf. Long discontinued, as Energy went to more efficient speakers, owners can still get service from a few niche operators who bought up the energy parts and offer tweeter rebuilds for $85.

Here is their brochure and an article from Winslow’s blog on the speaker too.

Integrated Amp
I have a pretty decent mid/ hi fi amp in the Vector Research VA 1400 faithfully in service since 1985. This was a CA, USA company that are long out of business but their gear was very good and similar to NAD and Rotel , rumored to be made in the same factory etc. 100 w into 4 ohms at .08% thd. 65 into 8 ohms. S/N 95 db for CD. Decent but not hi end stats.

Slim in profile, it weighs in at 20 lbs so it has a nice power supply system. I recall it had headroom of ~ 1.5 db so it can power the Energys quite well.

Amp & Cd.JPG

CD player
In pic above. Yes old school too here with the Sony CA7ES CD player from 1998. ‘ES’ (Extremely High Standard) was the Sony audiophile line for many years and this was the 7th series of components. ES too has gone by the wayside now. S/n 116 db , 2 hz – 25khz +/ .3 db. CDs still a great medium and going strong.

Headphones/Future Plans/Other
Have a pair of SteelSeries Arctis 3 which are a very good, budget, accurate headphone and a FiiO E10K ( like the K3) which is an adequate DAC.

What I will be adding is a Topping 10 likely and connecting my new Acer Aspire A135-42 laptop to the system to add HD music to the mix. I may also add 4K DVD player. All a work in progress.

FYI old VHS enthusiasts may note another true classic to the left, a Panasonic 4 head PV-V4522K VHS hifi! Still have some old hifi VHS concert tapes but rarely used now.

I hope that tape on the floor is acoustically treated audiophile grade otherwise all hell could break out in that room ;-)

I keep my Von Schweikerts covered with the boxes my Klipsch RF-82s came in when not in use. Looks like crap but keeps the cat from destroying them.

... and here I thought this was commentary following from @amirm's recent Klipsch loudspeaker review! ;)

We had two cats for a long time (both have passed away in the last few years) -- for a while, I had a pair of nice "A" series Altec Valencias in our erstwhile house's living room. One was missing its fretwork & grille, so I had to fashion a little cat protection from foam-core board :)

EDIT: I thought I had a photo of the speaker with the board in place, but I can't find it if I do. Suffice it to say that it fit comfortably on the flat part of the front baffle in front of that beautiful 416 woofer :)

Note the cleverly deployed Radio Shack 40-1375 "leaf" (planar) tweeter in a plastic Hammond enclosure used as a supertweeter to add a little sparkle to the 806B/811B driver/horn treble section of the Valencia. :) But I digress.

I am curious to read what you think about the LA4.
I like that you wrote the dimensions of your room as well: The room must be bigger than the impression we get from the photo.
Here is the shot from the rear of the room:

MainFromRearFeb2020.jpg

The LA4 is great at disappearing. I like having the cleanest path when using either the RMC-1 (on one input) and the Oppo UDP-205 XLR.
I did some comparison sending the Oppo though the RMC-1 in Reference Stereo mode and there were times I felt the LA4 was a bit more extended. However, this could be that the LA4 was more accurately attenuating at some levels.

Think I have already posted about my current two set ups, so here are the things (I remember) having been in and out of my systems since the early 80's.

Mitsubishi DA-A7DC Power Amp
AES? Pre Amp I cannot remember any details other than the brand, was really not that good and did not last that long.
Micro Seiki BL 51 Turntable w/Fidelity Research Tonearm, no idea what cartridge.
Audionics BT-2 Pre Amp
Audionics CC-2 Power Amp
IMF Electronics ALS-30 Loudspeakers (real beauties, why oh why did I ever...)
Mission PCM 4000 CD Player
Thorens TD 126 MkIV Turntable with a Souther Linear Arm - the arm is gone and I still have the table, working fine just in the closet.
Accoustic Research M-1 Bookshelf Speakers, these were imaging monsters that sounded pretty fine. Passed them on to a close friend's son who was moving for his first job after college graduation.

Also had a DJ set up, but kept that off the list.

That's a seriously impressive setup. Do you mind my asking what you use to switch the Salon2s from the Benchmark for 2ch to the Emotiva for Mch? Sorry if that's remedial but it's an issue I've been wrestling with as I come up to speed on how to optimize my own rig for both.
