To the manufacturer yes.For barely any more cost to the manufacturer.
Normal manufacturer cost to MSRP is X5

"Normal manufacturer cost to MSRP is X5" ........ but it doesn't have to be. Wharfedale could have deviated from the norm and only charged a 3X premium to MSRP. They could have made that speaker so much better for not much more money. To the manufacturer yes.

Obviously, you don't understand how pricing in the audio industry works."Normal manufacturer cost to MSRP is X5" ........ but it doesn't have to be. Wharfedale could have deviated from the norm and only charged a 3X premium to MSRP. They could have made that speaker so much better for not much more money.
Lets say the total cost to the Manufacturer was $35 to go from 5 to 6 1/2" and from 8" to 10" .........so do a 3X and for $35 that only adds $105 to the total cost of the speaker. $105 is nothing for a $2,000 speaker....From $2000 to $2,105.
Forgetting about Dovedale?I have a question about THE Wharfedale Linton. Why did they choose to use a 5" midrange and 8" woofer....and not a 6 1/2 " midrange and 10" woofer ? That speaker would have been exponentially better with those much larger drivers, it would have played a lot louder with lower distortion with a 6 1/2" and 10"...plus if you look at that speaker enclosure, it is so wide that they could have easily placed a 10" woofer on that enclosure without making the speaker any bigger. If I was designing the speaker there is NO WAY I would have used a 5" and 8" instead of a 6 1/2" and 10" because they had plenty of room to use a 6 1/2" and 10". Why did Wharfedale CHEAT their customers by using the smaller drivers ??
They do look like they may be a fun party speaker. They have all the makings of a loud and proud rocker.Interestingly, the Indina Line DJ 310 is exactly that: 3-way "monkey coffin" with 10" woofer.

Allegedly not as refined as the Linton, but far from crappy from what reviews say. Still proper hifi despite the "DJ" name. Certainly a budget model (500-600€ the pair), but from a reputable manufacturer with a long tradition - just like the Linton.
Too bad these are discontinued and sold out. I missed the very last pair on Amazon by a week, waiting for paycheck. Bluh. Hifi shops around here don't have them anymore either. Would've loved to try them out at least. Fairly okay neutrality, high efficiency of 94dB, and fat bass. Sounds like big fun for the money!
They don't even measure badly, especially for their price:Interestingly, the Indina Line DJ 310 is exactly that: 3-way "monkey coffin" with 10" woofer.

Those are wonderful JBL's, enjoy them!Hello, I’d like to share some excitement about my new endgame speakers! I recently acquired the JBL S9900, a slightly older model that debuted in 2009. While its measurements may not be perfect, it matches my sound preferences perfectly.

According to Dirac Live measurements in my listening area, the frequency response has a gentle slope with a slight emphasis around 7kHz. Although this might suggest a bright sound, that’s not the case. The sound is clear, smooth, and beautiful. This might be due to the unique directivity of the compression driver combined with the horn.
Additionally, the mid-bass has a crisp and punchy quality, which might be due to the 15-inch woofer being used up to a relatively high frequency of 900Hz, possibly leading to a slight narrowing of the directivity. I tried adjusting some uneven points with Equalizer APO, but I ended up preferring the uncorrected sound. I’ve only applied Dirac Live corrections below 300Hz for the low frequencies.
The distance to the speakers is 2 meters, and I’m using a VTF-3 MK5 subwoofer to extend the bass response down to 16Hz.
This speaker is capable of producing very high volume levels. Even at 110dB, the sound remains impressively clean. While I only listen at such volumes for very short periods to protect my hearing, it feels incredibly refreshing to enjoy music at such powerful levels. At the same time, the speakers perform exceptionally well at low volumes, delivering a delicate and immersive sound that wraps you in its tonal richness.
In summary, the JBL S9900 speakers have exceeded my expectations with their unique combination of clarity, smoothness, and powerful bass. While they might not be perfect on paper, their sound perfectly aligns with my preferences, making them an ideal addition to my system. I’m truly enjoying the listening experience they offer
Sal also seems to be using JBL HDI towers. JBL is the bestThose are wonderful JBL's, enjoy them!
Thank you for your post!
I purchased the speakers as a used item, but even if I couldn’t have gotten them as used, I would still have been satisfied buying them at the brand-new price. Even if a higher-performing model of the K2 is released in the future, I’m so satisfied with the sound of the S9900 that I have no intention of replacing them. I will treasure these speakersI'm jealous. Only few people can afford 60k speakers - enjoy it very hard
Really beautiful speakers. I know that speakers of that quality must have inspired you to spend absolutely thousands and thousands of hours listening to all of your CD's that you have in your record collection. Congratulations, they're really gorgeous ! Are you proud of them ? Do you mind me asking how much did you spend ? I think you or someone mentioned $60,000 was MSRP . How much did you pay ?? I actually knew that they were very expensive, I have a huge amount of love for JBL. I have always loved JBL. My very first pair of high end speakers were JBL L7's !!! My L7's were my pride and joy !! Driven by an Acurus A250 !! And also an Aragon 8008BB. But mostly by an Acurus A250. The 8008 BB was honestly overkill, the 8008 BB could destroy speakers if I was not careful. The Acurus A250 is the greatest Power Amplifier I have ever owned probably other than the Aragon 8008BB and the Aragon 8008X5. I graduated high school and when I went off to College, my First semester in College I purchased a Pair of JBL L7's from OneCall in Spokane, Washington. I think I spent $1,400 / pair. They had an MSRP of $2,000 and I got them for $1,400 shipping included. Best $1,400 I ever spent. When they arrived, my Goodness I was so excited !!! My friends in College saw how excited I was - Yeah those are absolutely beautiful speakers they're $60,000 and you know they're actually worth $60,000 !!Hello, I’d like to share some excitement about my new endgame speakers! Thank you for your kind words! I'm truly happy with these speakers. I feel they’re worth every bit of the brand-new price, so getting them used for 2.1 million yen (about $13,000) was an amazing deal.Really beautiful speakers. Don't know about Washington but the US in general I would say yes, maybe even more so, just a guess. How about in North America, especially in places like Washington State? Are JBL speakers as popular there as they are here in Japan?
