At the end of the day we see some miraculous disruptions in that web, and we kno now, , why ropeburn envies the avatar of Hapo :cool:
 
A good many sites are unhappy with my use of MullvadDNS, and all my traffic is legit. Guess they prefer my traffic going through their own sniffers.

I don't care, I just drop whatever site it is.

Qobuz seems to have no problem with streaming/downloading music using the very same VPN and DNS, but they have secured their "magazine" which cannot be read inside the app with the DNS. Fine by me. There are a lot of other stuff they should sort out in their apps before fixing that. A lot :cool:

"Semi true" eh? So Amir is semi connected with all the TLAs that the big social platforms are?

If any of those are actually interested in the content here then they can of course get it and nearly all of that can be done with the public access to ASR. Apart from an email address I don't think there's any PII in ASR that I have given that isn't on the public pages. The point of age verification is to tie user accounts to real life identities.

They can be unhappy with Mullvad (very good vpn), but can't really know which DNS you are using. If your DNS filters out ad/track/malware stuff then they can detect that delivery to you has holes (to a degree) and render services unusable. Same as with adblocker detection in general.

I think VPN solves one stack of problems while an uncensored, configurable DNS solves a different one. But many VPN providers include uncensored DNS and a good bunch of them let you set up custom DNS profiles, eliminating the need to do that yourself in a smaller environment (mobile, vm).

DNS manipulation (censoring, profiling, redirection) has reached disgusting levels while doing absolutely nothing for the user. I recommend PI-hole and unbound basically for every household and business.
 
Flipped into reddit for a short time and will never do again. A lot of boring nonsense posts of no interest for me. Just like in other forums like facebook which I also left.
 
The interlink between Goog and Red after their deal about AI source is probably forcing Red to become more reliable in some way after the epic failures of stone eating and stuff.
Anonymity is great source of fun (or safety, for example no one knows the weak points of your house security if you don't post pictures) but not a good source for the AI data Goog sources though Red.

So...

The good thing about Reddit is many subreddits, also electronics so it is not just like facebook (to me)

They like blocking of VPN for security. It's a choice, they can withdraw their free service as they see fit. TOR and certain countries might also be blocked.

Yeah, but the Reddit problem clearly triggers privacy concerns, and then again, privacy and security properly dealt with at all levels would kind of take care of a lot of other issues.

Some/many browsers relates to DNS vendors as part of their business model and makes changing it in the browser settings awkward. A couple of years since I dropped Vivaldi thus my memory might not be 100% precise, but I wasn't successful in sorting that one out wrt secure dns and dropped Vivaldi. Believe Firefox has become better and I'm fine. Mullvad browser is my favourite, Firefox the spare.

As for Pihole, I get your drift, but I am all over the place thus it won't cover my setup and devices and I will have to set it up individually, and that's just the old Arch machine, AUR (unsafe) or get the script and so on. My fault, I would have to set up a half decent network, which common sense advocates. Signed up for 5G , but the obligatory 5G router and the software was rubbish and unsafe. Returned it and dropped the project. They are digging in the neighbour street, and I suspect there is a fiber competitor at work.

What Pihole config do you use/suggest for name resolution?

I used Pihole with success for years but then got into conflict with my ISP who, after some connectivity issues, refused service if their router was not attached to the ONT. It's generally a good router, lickety-split, and with much better configuration than my Asus devices but it does not permit me to specify the name server address that DHCP should tell clients to use. So to resume using Pihole I will need to turn wifi off on the Verizon router and config it for pass through to my own wifi router. Such a pita that I haven't done it.

Do you use any privacy enhancement on your phone while away from networks you trust? Like Pihole for when you're on cellular data.

True but privacy is also a problem of the commons. Simplest example is: I don't use Gmail and pay for service but Google gets most of my email anyway because my correspondents are using Gmail. I can opt out only by opting out of corresponding with Gmail users. Obviously name resolution is different but what it all has in common is that I don't want privacy to available only to anoraks like me. I'm tired of maintaining hacker skills. I know some others that get a kick out of developing and sharpening elite computer and network chops but I'm over it.

Unbound as local dns server for pihole. Makes upstream routing of dns obsolete. Alternative would be DoH/DoT upstream to cloudflare f.e. - but I don't like the performance and that they could profile. Upstream routing of unencrypted dns is subject to monitoring and should be avoided. But still better than provider dns, which unlocks all bad things.

Pihole can also do DHCP.

You can connect to a wireless access point, or roam between them, and get dhcp from some other device. There is no logic between these things.

A small Pi4b and an sdcard is enough for all of this and ~1mln blocklist entries from a dozen public lists or so.

For mobiles Blokada does the job everywhere. It works a bit different as a vpn tunnel, but the principle of blocklists and custom entries is the same, plus lists of apps. DNS is upstream encrypted.

Have explored the rabbit hole, and my personal conclusion is that there is no such thing as privacy or full extent security if I want to take advantage of any online service++. Anyone who succeeds in that has arcieved it by having a very high level of security competence far beyond what amateurs without a very specific and strong intererest for it are capable of, or by an amazing fluke.

Thus, what I assume is that everything I do online is accessible, shared and handled beyond my control. I just relate to that and act accordingly. In my opinion the worst thing one can do if security and privacy is important on an intellectual level and actually need it beyond the philosophical/principal perspective is to assume having it.
