Alright ASR, many of us have a significant other and let's face it, there is a reason why this hobby is predominately men, because the women in our lives don't care about this hobby, they think it's a waste of money, they think we are addicted to something silly, they think we are ruining their home decor.

And sometimes, it can land us in the doghouse. This thread is meant to be satire and self-deprecating, yet all with a hint of "yeah, I know it's a joke, but there is truth to it." or "yeah, I can relate."

This is me the other day.

ChatGPT generated image: "generate me a cartoon of a man hiding a new amplifier that they just purchase in their shirt as they walk by their wive"

Can't relate, wife never cared what I got. When I showed her the Genelec 8361a all she said was " those look neat, better than those boxes you usually get."
Note: I didn't get the Genelec, it was just a test.

Good replies, even if a bit risky :

'How many pairs of shoes do you have now, dear?"
"Is that a fake Balenclava/Louis Vitton/Jimmy Choo?"
"I hear they're shipping Roja orders by armored car nowadays."
"The bank called about your credit at the beauty salon. You need to call them back ASAP."

Then duck and run! :D:D:D

A thread in poor taste.

Respectfully disagree.

My girlfriend was unhappy that we had to watch the Rugby (I live in South Africa) on my laptop. I then got a TV (way overdue). She was happy. I was not. The sound from the TV speakers was dismal.

That started my journey to what I have now, a nice 5.1 system. She cannot understand why I would spend a lot of money on sound. She does love watching the opening scene of her favourite movie, Top Gun, seriously loud though with the sub pounding away :)

"Hmmm, they're bigger than I was expecting," was the only point made re my upgrade from Gen 8030 to 8341. I'll take that and consider myself lucky given an also expensive mountain biking habit.

Some posts are mortifying!

I've been divorced and single for years, so I can buy what I want, when I want! :)

Years ago I had a pal who was into hi-fi, was a very talented multi-instrumentalist and also a talented woodworker. His day job was making reproduction Louis XIV furniture out of old floorboards. He had a complete woodshop in his garage so he seemed the ideal person to make some cabs for the speakers I was designing.

We cut the panels in the garage but it was January and cold in there so we moved to his living room to assemble them. Regrettably, we did not quite finish them before his wife got back from work.

She went crazy - and then when she noticed we'd got sawdust and wood glue on the carpet and she went even crazier.

They got divorced not long after, I don't think it was just over that one incident, but it didn't help.

Frankly, I don't blame her about bringing garage work into the house. I have OCD, so saw dust and glue, etc inside the house wouldn't be kosher for me neither. Which is why I got a heater in the garage should I need it when the temperature drops and I need to do some work in the garage.

I wouldn't feel too bad if I were you though, there's a foundational reason for the divorce.

Well it wasn't my idea to build them in his living room so I don't feel too guilty about it, :)

In my house we talk about what we do, and what we are thinking about doing, with each other. We also listen to each other, and try to understand where the other is coming from, even if we don't really "get" the thing they are into. If my wife is excited about something, that makes me happy. I don't have to get why. She likes it when I am excited about something, she doesn't have to get the details of why.

I do understand this "doghouse" dynamic, how it comes to be. I would say it is because of a failure to really, honestly communicate with one another. Before, during, and after purchases.

I sure can remember those days.
After 2 divorces and the breakup with a 10 year live-in, I realized those types of relationships where things I just wasn't very good at. ;)
Although my folks enjoyed a 50 year marriage, my Dad always told me,
"Son, women are like buses, they come and they go.
From then on I lived alone and just enjoyed the Cum and Go types. ;)

A thread in poor taste.

So, like the 'humor' thread, but concentrated?

No dust collection for the tools? No drop sheets for inside stuff? Seems like rookie mistakes and unlike a seasoned woodworker.

I do recall 'going crazy' myself when my then significant other bought some outside chairs (steel legs, no rubber tips) inside onto the newly varnished hardwood floor for some guests. No one understood, sigh.

:D When I was in high school I went to a friend's house and his dad had a car engine on the dining table!!!

My "motto" is "No wife, no kids, no pets, no problems!" I had that on my license plate frame for awhile and it got a lot of laughs. The idea came to me when people at work were complaining about their domestic issues and I couldn't join-in.

My wife doesn't care about the space it takes up. She just hates music. So she doesn't care what I bring into the house (as long as I do not turn it on to do what it is supposed to do [make music]).

My partner has a ferocious knitting habit, need to build another cedar lined closet for all her sweaters I think and then maybe someday I'll get one.

Have you seen the prices of yarn? A typical sweater can run $200++/

So when I get a new bit of gear that's too big to hide under a shirt, there it is....

I can't talk with huge authority because I am recently single again (and shall not mingle anytime soon).
But love for music has been always something that was a shared thing in relationships, hence my approach for audio was never an issue. I think the fact I always had a tendency for a modern, minimalist approach to my environment helped in that respect... in fact it was my objection to bloat (Buddha figures, beneficial stone energies, additional decorative sprawl) that sometimes strained home environment discussions.

LOL, Heard that!. Yes besides Hi-Fi my most serious life passion has always been motorcycles.
Can't begin to add up the times I've heard the married types hanging there heads and saying "the old lady told me either my bike has to go, or she will."
I've heard that once or twice myself and was always the gallant type to open the door for her. :p

I show my wife how much I could be spending, and that softens the blow somewhat. But she also controls the money, so I can’t buy anything too crazy anyway.
