I don't trust anyone any more TBH. But such tools are the only defense for the Windows dependent layman, not able to switch to Linux and/or go offline with their data, like I did. Or can you propose some better defense for these?

Nope, just general thought sharing.
Linux is the perfect desktop replacement for a large number of users. If all they do is email, surf, and general computing it can be perfect. I maintain the public computer in our condo association library, have PCLinuxOS on it and no one has ever mentioned or noticed about it not being Windoze. They get to do everything they need and can't get things FUBAR doing stupid things. 15 years now and not a single virus or other nasty to repair, I only need to clean it out now and then of all sort of various stuff being downloaded and saved. You wouldn't believe the personal & financial info I find saved to the desktop or documents/download folders.

Sure, the only absolute is death, and even then some think different. LOL

Looking into things a bit further I see that commercial users are being charged $60 for the first year and the price will double every year after. OUCH.
So far I don't see talk of any further extensions for consumer users but I have a feeling M$ is going to feel the bite from the public over this as time passes by. There's gonna be millions screaming after next month.. I could be wrong ?

Even MS is not almighty. What goes up, must come down. But it will take time, and real competition, for businesses to "jump ship".
And this might create another near-monopoly...

Every time I walk past the Apple store at the shopping mall I look into the Apple store. It's always very busy. I mean full of people. The shopping mall is dead and the Apple store is full. Amazing.

I've never been inclined to buy Apple, mainly because their (IMHO) latently "sectarian" marketing.
But maybe I got it wrong. We'll see what the future holds.

I'm not an Apply guy in any way either. I hate the way they try to lock you in with their devices being inoperable with most
anything that isn't Apple. I own only one product, a Apple 4k TV streamer box because it interfaces best with Apple Music and
their Multich/Atmos music files. As much as I hate to say it, it is an amazing streamer for $100.

For me it's Apples much more closed ecosystem. With Windows and Android you at least have a choice between different hardware vendors, and apps to access data on the other platform. With Mac OS and IOS you are restricted to Apple hardware, and Apple makes it difficult for developers of other platforms to creste apps which connect to their ecosystem.

So far, I'm fine with Linux, as an early retiree I can handle most tasks with Mint's onboard programs (LO, FF etc.).
I can even access Bitlocker encrypted drives with it.
For offline duties and local media - Windows (dual boot, even on my laptop).
Life is good.
