The Courteous Vinyl Playback Discussion

Apparently Quebec avant-garde band Angine de Poitrine, which have recently blasted out of obscurity to the front of everybody’s “ next big thing” list, put out vinyl records that are selling out like hotcakes before record day.

They recently got a very big boost when Rick Beato gave them enthusiastic coverage.

Has anybody checked them out yet?
Interesting stuff… the guitarist plays in half tones!

Yep! Mostly trying to say that vinyl is fine, but record players never really worked out for me, they were always more of a necessary evil. Cassettes, even more so. FM is for the car or kitchen, but it is enjoyable in those circumstances.

On another note and one that might describe some of the young people who are discovering the ritualistic joys of vinyl: I asked a seventeen year old friend if they had a “stereo” on which to listen to Mendelssohn’s, The Hebrides, and the response was a quizzical look and then a smile as she said, “Oh, I have my buds.” Vinyl or not, give me a freaking stereo with speakers!
That reminds me of a favorite FFSS Decca recording, one with "Cinerama" imaging and a definitive performance:

They're really awesome musicians, if the music is good or not, it's obviously a personal preference.
good to know that they released a vinyl record.

Listening to it now, thanks.
Do you know the British post-punk band, Felt? Their best known song is called, Primitive Painters, produced by Robin Guthrie with backing vocals by Elizabeth Fraser. There’s a fine comp of Felt’s called, Stains on a Decade. Pretty great.

Today’s was PG Tips new blend.
So is this tea reputed to have a high level of caffeine or other chemicals that give a rush to it's drinker ?

Hey, I’m just above the grade of tea common sewer. But black for me.
No problem, you used the term "speedball" and that perk'd this ancient OGs curiosity.
Speedball usually referred to a mix of some very serious uppers with depressants, heroin and coke or meth.
Very intense high but one of the surest mixes for a trip to the morgue.

Thanks Linus. Buying new records used to cheer me up too, but the racketeering-level profit margins in recent pricing trends for new vinyl have taken that pleasure away from me. And sadly so.

I buy nearly 90% used and 10% brand new records. Used ones in decent shape are the best price / performance ratio, IMHO.

Worst of all, nearly all new vinyl has a digital stage in it befoe it gets pressed, so negating the prime selling point- all analog.

Except. except. except . . .

There has been a digital stage in almost all records mastered after 1979 thanks to digital delay lines for the mastering engineer to hear climaxes before they reach the cutting stylus. And if you can't tell the difference, maybe there isn't a difference.
