I don't misinterpret what you mean and I did make terrible financial decisions like most people did. I survived and standing pretty tall regardless of those bad decisions.

Not negative. More like we both have a different working definition of terrible.

I bought a fancy VCR once against better judgement. It had issues.
I bought a bad sounding pair of speakers too.
And have owned classic tube and transistor gear that was less reliable than I like.
etc.

None of these are terrible decisions. Survival wasn’t at risk. Standing tall was never in question. It was just audio gear, and some of the bad decisions I was even able to sell.

I used to work in audio sales in the '80s, and have seen terrible life-changing decisions made by customers and acquaintances spending way beyond their means. Not just audio...

Regarding here we go again, I don't recall going anywhere with you... For sure I tend to not post in these non-audio threads, and this reinforces that since people tend to read different meanings than intended.

Some people are always looking for an argument.

And not to mention, some people can afford to make certain bad financial decisions. I made plenty, such as buying Starbucks coffee as a petty example. But I can easily afford such bad financial decisions. . .including this HiFi hobby, but, I'm just this guy.

$800 in 1980 is worth $3,200 today.

If I can get that for all of my audio equipment, that is a huge win in my opinion.

But yeah, that is not called a financial investment, not that I ever would treat an hobby as one.

Compare to what? I look at how expensive my hobby are as a ratio of time I spend enjoying it in relation to how much I have spent.
I don’t know what other hobby you have and how much time a day ( a week, a month ) you spend enjoying listening to music on your “HiFi audio”. So it might very well be that the money you spent was way too much for what you get out of it.
I would bet that most, if not nearly all, ASR forum member are finding our hobby very reasonable from how much we spend, particularly if following the recommendation and advice that can be found reading it.
I spend between one hour to many hours every day enjoying recordings that I have had for decades on equipment I have had for decades, when comparing to all my other hobby, except one, they are all more and some time much more expensive thane joying music on my “HiFi audio”.

The cost of buying Lecia M11 and a few Leica lens would allow most people to have a very nice audio system. In this hobby one can spend as much or little as one wants depending on their financial situation. Watch collecting buying automatic watches can be extremely expensive as well. What is a cheap hobby that people can get involved with ?
