(2000) found that musicians judge refl ections to be about seven times greater than ordinary listeners, meaning that they derive a satisfying amount of spaciousness from refl ections at a much lower sound level than ordinary folk: “Musicians prefer weaker amplitudes than listeners do.” It is logical to think that this might apply to recording professionals as well, perhaps even more so, because they create artificial reflections electronically and manipulate them at will while listening to the effects. There can be no better opportunity for training and/or adaptation. In fact, it is entirely reasonable to think that acousticians who spend much of their lives moving around in rooms while listening to revealing test signals can become sensitized to aspects of sound fields that ordinary listeners blithely ignore. This is a caution to all of us who work in the field of audio and acoustics. Our preferences may reflect accumulated biases and therefore may not be the same as those of our customers" (this is from the second edition). Two groupsI was intrigued when he proposed a bi- or mulitmodal distribution of listener preference (in the case he was referring to, speaker performance), because I'm pretty sure Toole has written about that very thing with regard to related research on preference: for 'envelopment' vs 'detail', with the general consumer tending to prefer the former, while audio production engineers (and IIRC, musicians? I forget the details) the latter. (I take that as a proxy too for mid/far field listening vs near field. It makes intuitive sense.)

At that age, many parties were celebrated that way at my place!
Doing it based on hopefully accurate measurements is what is awesomely new. And of course I have done it, but I didn't adjust it the way Dirac wanted entirely because I wanted to preserve the "character" of my system, not slavishly bow over. The measurements confirmed my listening impressions and allowed me to do sub adjustments (volume, position). An "ideal neutral system" is not my preference, although I am probably >85% there.

It is not as simple as i put it and I am probably to used to look at the deconvolved response. however, the deconvolution is simply a filtering operation which averages the chirp it self out save for one pulse. the harmonics and their time encoding is in the signal we hear.

For example, it would be trivial to do a study of a few dozen listeners and conclude that the ability to identify pitch without external reference is not verifiable, especially if you just average the results of all listeners. Then people can summarize as "Listeners can't identify pitch" or "Pitch is not identifiable." Maybe they'd go even further ato state the matter as "Objective research shows that listeners do not prefer absolute pitch."
In my opinion, too many posters like @kyuu and @Mort here are trying really hard to not allow the others to have "fun playing with the world." I'm not even playing with the world but rather trying to explore and understand what's been written/published and posted here and elsewhere, adding references and direct links whenever possible. This forum is called AUDIO SCIENCE REVIEW. In science, review articles include references and nuanced summaries. It seems to me that for users like @kyuu and @Mort, this is more like OBJECTIVIST DOGMA REGURGITATED with as much snark and as many one-liners as possible. It's like they're determined to win a race to the bottom.

Adaption and sound quality isn't the same.Dr Toole built the speaker shuffler room at Harman for the purpose of comparative evaluation of loudspeakers by listeners, and for not rooms nor for room treatments. Well, yes, room geometry, furnishings, and acoustic treatments will all greatly affect the quality of the reproduced sounds in the room. If rooms make no difference, people wouldn't be spending substantial amounts of time and money on concert hall acoustic research.
The preparation study Dr Toole did was to show, for the purpose of evaluating relative sound quality of loudspeakers, rooms had no significant confounding influence. Good loudspeakers ranked higher in listening tests than poor loudspeakers regardless of the rooms in which the comparisons were conducted (as long as they were compared in the same room), and therefore one speaker shuffler room was sufficient for the job.
In the same preparation work, Dr Toole also looked at the differences of rooms. Since blind, fast physical switching between rooms wasn't possible, he used binaural recordings in the comparisons. The results were the following, and they showed the effects from the rooms overwhelmed those from the loudspeakers. These results therefore showed that, even with rooms of very different sound quality, when listeners were given the little bit of time to adapt to the room, they could "listen through the room", and were able to rate the sound quality of loudspeakers with high consistency.

I fully agree to the last sentence.The whole study on preferences for directivity would be meaningless if the room didn't matter at all. Can you hear a difference between a narrow broadband speaker and a wide one? Or between an omni and narrow dispersion speaker? Yes, the difference is major.

Early arriving reflections from side wall is highly audible and considered detrimental. And absorption for late arriving reflections (rear wall) has always been considered psycoacoustically inferior and gives a different result compared to deep phase grating diffusion.
An informal blind listening test was conducted between M2 and Salon 2 and the latter won.Another weakness in the study are the speakers being tested. A broadband constant and narrow directivity speaker of good quality was never tested in his studies to my knowledge. This type of speaker would largely avoid the nearest side wall reflection, while a speaker ála Revel wouldn't.

He said and I repeat, for the purposes of evaluating speaker preference, the room effect is dialed out as long as listeners are allowed to acclimate to it.You used the argument against this that the room and acoustics basically don't matter.
