I appreciate this place for helping me on my journey. My audio systems have become exponentially better than they were a few years ago. Due to the subjective nature of hearing, audio is somewhat of a black art, so being able to know objective data about gear makes it possible to make better assessments. I’m thankful for being able to ask newbie questions so I can learn more. Coming from other forums that are all about subjective reviews it is refreshing.

I think I've heard the best hifi setup of my life tonight. A lot of the things I learned about putting this system together have come from this forum. Some basics include: a pair of good bookshelf speakers (especially in near field setup) and a subwoofer can be better than floor standing speakers, and eliminating the preamp in favor of a purely digital volume control can be as good as or better than an analog one. And also, that some vintage gear, when in good condition, can compete with modern equivalents. What I'm listening to now: SMSL DO100 Pro (RCA splitters to speaker amps and powered subwoofer) -> Kenwood L-05M's -> ELAC DBR62's -> ELAC SUB1010. This is better than using my old Vandersteens 2Ce Sig II's that I have for sale now, but have set up in a friend's place in the mean time!

Tonight I moved my setup and opted to use the DBR62's without a sub and I'm also starting to think that NOT using a subwoofer can work very well with a larger speaker in the right placement relative to walls/corners, and it makes it much simpler since you don't have to deal with the subwoofers settings and integration.

Just got the Hafler circuit going with my MiniDSP and I'm so happy!

Awesomeness has convened.

Edit: when I wrote this I didn’t actually have it working yet. Lol
