Short summary: Temu has been accused of selling merchandise at low prices when its real business model is collecting data beyond that necessary to run an e-commerce business. It is alleged the app is malware. This is a developing story. I wonder if this will be a repeat of the Tic-Toc mess.

Temu, an e-commerce platform owned by Chinese company PDD Holdings, has been embroiled in several controversies since its inception. The company, which launched in Boston in 2022, is known for selling discounted goods directly from China.

### Controversies:

1. **Privacy and Data Security Issues**:
- **Class Action Lawsuits**: Temu is facing multiple class action lawsuits in the U.S. for allegedly violating privacy laws. These lawsuits claim that the Temu app collects extensive personal data without users' consent and includes spyware that tracks users' activities across other apps and personal information [oai_citation:1,Temu Lawsuit: 2024 Updates](https://www.withevident.com/learn/temu-lawsuit-2024-updates) [oai_citation:2,Why Temu Poses a Threat to U.S. Businesses & Patent Holders | Observer](https://observer.com/2024/05/why-temu-poses-a-threat-to-american-businesses-and-patent-holders/).
- **Security Breaches**: Temu has been accused of failing to safeguard its customers' data, leading to several incidents where hackers allegedly stole personal and financial information. The lawsuits assert that these security failures are due to cost-cutting measures that compromised data protection standards [oai_citation:3,Temu Lawsuit: 2024 Updates](https://www.withevident.com/learn/temu-lawsuit-2024-updates).

2. **Unsolicited Marketing**:
- **Violations of Telephone Consumer Protection Act**: Temu has been sued for engaging in unsolicited text message marketing, including to individuals registered on the National Do-Not-Call Registry. The complaints include allegations of sending text messages without consent and outside permissible hours, which violates the Oklahoma Telephone Solicitation Act of 2022 [oai_citation:4,Temu Lawsuit: 2024 Updates](https://www.withevident.com/learn/temu-lawsuit-2024-updates).

3. **Competition and Intellectual Property**:
- **Patent and Trademark Infringement**: Temu has been implicated in selling counterfeit or unauthorized replicas of well-known branded products. This has drawn criticism for exploiting intellectual property rights, affecting small businesses and patent holders in the U.S. who find it challenging to combat these infringements due to the international nature of the company [oai_citation:5,Why Temu Poses a Threat to U.S. Businesses & Patent Holders | Observer](https://observer.com/2024/05/why-temu-poses-a-threat-to-american-businesses-and-patent-holders/).
- **Legal Battles with Shein**: Temu and Shein, another Chinese fast-fashion company, have sued each other over allegations of deceptive marketing practices and antitrust violations. Temu accused Shein of intimidation and unfair business practices, while Shein alleged that Temu used social media influencers to spread false information about Shein [oai_citation:6,Temu Lawsuit: 2024 Updates](https://www.withevident.com/learn/temu-lawsuit-2024-updates).

4. **Consumer Trust and Business Practices**:
- **Regulatory Scrutiny**: The company has been under scrutiny for its business practices, including concerns about the legitimacy and safety of the products sold on its platform. There have been reports of privacy risks associated with the use of the Temu app, particularly regarding data collection and sharing practices [oai_citation:7,Why Temu Poses a Threat to U.S. Businesses & Patent Holders | Observer](https://observer.com/2024/05/why-temu-poses-a-threat-to-american-businesses-and-patent-holders/).

Overall, Temu's rapid growth and competitive pricing strategies have brought significant legal and regulatory challenges, highlighting the complexities and risks associated with global e-commerce operations.

As long as they don't sue a reviewer, I'm guessing people won't stop shopping there ;)

I bought five bucket hats from Temu for $10 and some change (there was a $10 minumum for "free shipping").

They were poor quality, but do provide head shade, not unexpected for the price, I suppose. I've already thrown three in the trash.

Then they thought they dielivered late and offered a $5 credit for future puchase (at least a year ago)

Recently I got another $5 credit offer in the mail since I was such a good customer.

I doubt I'll visit again.

No "app" involved, just a website visit.

Temu is about as sketchy as it gets, now they're showing pricing in terms of biweekly payments instead of the full price by default. It's like a sketchy mall kiosk became an entire website.

And then there's this aspect

Reports suggest hats and shoes sold by ultra-fast online retailers Shein, Temu and AliExpress contain toxic substances such as phthalates and formaldehyde. Insoles inside sandals sold by Chinese online retailer Temu reportedly contained lead at a level 11 times higher than the permitted limit.15 aug. 2024
