Hi There,

New member here with some questions, need to lean on the expertise in this forum! Amp, speaker, and phono preamp questions, all the questions lol

Acquired some new Tannoy PDI 6DC LP speakers with requirement of 240W @ 8 ohms. Purchased a Aiyima A07 Pro (upgraded) Amp to drive the speakers. First impressions, these are the best sounding speakers my ears have heard in my life, while assuming I'm still leaving room on the table for better sound quality based on the A07 Pro output readings in this forums A07 pro review.

Question 1 - if i upgrade to the Aiyima 48V10A power supply would that get me closer to the actual requirements my speakers need or is this amp just not able to get to the output needed for both speakers? Is there an option to purchase a second A07 Pro, 2 A07 Pro amps driving the speakers to get above the recommend output for the speakers, how to wire/hook up? Or should i just look at a different and or more expensive amp that has the actual output required? Any recommendations are appreciated.

Question 2 - pending outcome to question 1 - I have 4 of the PCI 6DC LP speakers, what would be the recommend avenue to go if i wanted to drive 4 of these speakers at the same time? 2 of them sound amazing what would 4 do? Lol

Question 3 - just getting my vinyl program set up, turntable with built in pre amp just isn't cutting it with output through existing set up. Been looking at the Aiyima T3 Pro to pair with my A07 Pro to get the vinyl output matching what i can hear through the A07 Pro when playing music via Bluetooth. Pending recommendations for the questions above would the T3 be a good match for my system or should i go another route with the output these speakers are capable of handling?

general info, I listen to a large variety of music genres but mainly focus on very loud heavy metal music with a good helping of classis rock mixed in there. Guitar player with very high output amps for playing so I'm used to and like it loud. lol but quality loud not a wall of noise.

So basically, looking for recommendations to get the most out of these Tannoy speakers on the amp side then recommendations for phono pre amp to match my vinyl output with the bluetooth sounds/quality levels.

Thanks for any input!

Hi @Judochop! Welcome to ASR.

You're misunderstanding power requirements.

Speakers do not have a set power requirement, below which they don't perform to spec or anything.

All they have are various maximum permissible input power specs (Peak/Continuous/Music).

Exceed these and you risk permanent damage.

The actual power requirements are dictated entirely by your desired playback level and can be anywhere between 1W and 200W, depending on desired SPL, listening distance, room acoustics, and playback material.

These power requirements are not listed in the product specs, since they can vary so much.

That means that, if your A07 Pro is able to push the Tannoy to your desired loudness without audible distortion, then it fulfills your very own power requirements and upgrading its power supply or switching to a new Amp entirely would achieve nothing.

ahh thank you very much, so they sound great because the A07 with my current volume levels are able to power the speakers just fine. misunderstanding speaker spec had me believing i needed that recommend power level at all times and was leaving performance on the table etc.

i could put in the upgraded power supply and maybe hear a difference but again current setup seems to be running everything just fine. very clear at all volume levels why spend more money when they sounds great currently.

i haven't turned volume passed 3/4 on the A07 yet but at that level its plenty loud.

ill add a phono pre amp into the equation (the one in my turntables output is just too low) and i should have a great set up.

There's probably no way to know what's built-into your turntable but a gain of about 40dB at 1kHz* is typical. So look for one with 40dB or more of gain. Of course, records and cartridges vary too.

IMO - Vinyl is never "great". :p

* As you may know, phono preamps have RIAA playback equalization so gain is about 20dB higher at the lowest frequencies and about 20dB lower at the highest frequencies.

Firstly, notice most speakers have a sensitivity of around 86dB (1 W @ 1m)

Meaning if you put most speakers next to each other and plug them to the same amplifier at the same volume setting, they will all sound about as loud.

Some speakers ask for more power, like in this case (e.g. Recommended amplifier power), because they have a higher maximum SPL. Most tiny bookshelves will practically start distorting before 100dB SPL. Calculate the power needed, 1W @ 86dB, 10W @ 96dB, 20W @ 99dB. So those speakers will ask for an amp in the 20W to 50W range. In your case, your speaker can reach 10dB louder before it starts to distort, so the speaker asks for an amp of 200W to 500W to reach the full SPL.

So if you're not going to listen louder compared to before, you don't need a more powerful amp.
