How's the plankton and blackness?

Nice review, @amirm . Regarding the scene of these new powerful dongles, I wonder if FiiO has sent their new offerings your way, amirm? The KA13 and KA17 are similar types of "monsters" like these Tanchjins, offering desktop level of power, and even built-in PEQ, in a dongle factor:

PLANKTON? Does Guttenberg ascribe "plankton" to things he listens to? I know who he is but haven't read / listened to / watched a lot of his content.

No, it is an issue with AP software. It only supports ASIO. I use ASIO4ALL and for some reasons it corrupts the bits for this entire class of audio.
For me I used a laptop and a spdif input device (USB external soundcard).
Set the spdif as "listen to" in sound setting, configured as below:

AP Spdif Out --> Soundcard Spdif In --> Laptop --> USB Dac --> AP balance input
AP settling time need to increase.

Hallo Folks.

There might be cheaper and similarly performing products, but this one could have it’s own value beyond the nice design (and anime engraving).

It is very important how resistant portable devices are, especially their connectors. If this is a sturdy build, it might be cheaper in the long run for people who are more active or less carefull with their devices.

Cheers.:)

What about output impedance?
Tanchjim told me it's under 0.2ohm for both outputs (3.5mm and 4.4mm).

I couldn't see any difference in FR measurement of 9ohm impedance Hybrid IEM, when compared with DAC/Amp which has OI less than 0.1ohm as well.

Hi,

What would be the output power @ 300 ohms, unbalanced ?

Thanks

The back side has a very detailed anime engraving. It kind of looks nice and likely appeals to likes of people who watch Z-reviews.
Oh right, yeah, the backside is not pictured in your review. I've looked at some pics of it online elsewhere and I can see the anime backside. I still think the front looks tacky & then re the anime backside then you either like anime or not, it's not something I'd look for to have engraved on my devices.

The one for $10 less doesn't have any of that.
Ah, well that's good! Very useful for buyers to know they can choose one without the engravings - in which case you can also get rid of the engravings on the front (as well as getting rid of the anime on the back), so that would get rid of the tacky appearance of the front (in my eyes).

So are you going to call them on their specifications being blatantly exaggerated or just let it slide, huh?
Which spec(s) are you concerned about in particular? There do seem to be some typos on that spec sheet. For example, other places list the output as 285mw at 32 ohms, more or less matching the measurements, not 320 ohms as indicated on that spec sheet.

Maybe this has been already asked but where's the previous Tanchjim? Maybe it's my eyes or something, but at least I can't find Tanchjim Space from the chart. I believe it has been measured tho?

Are there any meaningful differences between the two anyway - apart from the odd artwork on Luna.. Apparently there's more power @ 33ohm.

I think the relatively small size of these dongles has an unexpected benefit: the OEMs don’t have much space to screw these plain vanilla (but excellent!) chips…
Maybe that is what it is. My guess is that some company figured out a good design and then every other company is using a variation of that design. Or maybe a few different designs since they don't all use the exact same DAC chip and such.

Hey @amirm would it be possible to integrate interference testing (emc testing) into your dongle dac reviews?
As these devices are used more portably they are subjected to a wider range of em interference. I personally have the problem with my otherwise great Tempotec BHD Sonata(the one with the glass front and back), which sometimes pick up signals in the supermarket (maybe due to LEDs) and other places. To test this, probably a signal generator connected to an antenna sweeping from a couple of MHz to a couple of GHz, while recording the output of the dongle playing silence, should do the trick.

Anyone have thoughts on the Tanchjim app? Seems to offer 5 band parametric eq with q values, which might increase the appeal of this product for ios users

The PEQ feature in the App is for the ‘DSP’ versions of Tanchjim IEMs. Although I don’t own the Luna, I am fairly confident (based on the chips it’s build around) it does not support PEQ.
